Cricket Australia announced board approval of a self-determination model for Big Bash privatisation on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, allowing individual state associations to decide whether and when to sell stakes in their franchises. The decision opened the pathway for private investment in the league, with the Melbourne Renegades expected to become the first franchise to move under new ownership ahead of the 2027-28 season.
Cricket NSW responded formally on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with a statement expressing serious concerns about the privatisation initiative. NSW owns both the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder franchises and has consistently opposed the privatisation model since earlier in 2026, maintaining that neither of its clubs would adopt it.
“Cricket NSW is disappointed by Cricket Australia’s decision to proceed with introducing private investment into the Big Bash Leagues without alignment across Australian cricket. This decision risks leaving cricket in NSW and Australia strategically and financially worse off, with direct consequences for our ability to invest in grassroots cricket,” said in a statement as quoted by Cricinfo.
“We are proud to be part of an Australian cricket system that is the envy of the world. Yesterday’s announcement threatens this system. The redistribution of profits to external investors reduces our ability to invest in community cricket, creating long-term impacts at all levels. The Cricket NSW Board is also disappointed by the process leading to this decision. We have raised concerns directly with Cricket Australia, proposed an alternative pathway to strengthen the Big Bash, and highlighted significant risks within the proposal, informed by high-quality external advice,” it added.
CA approves BBL privatisation amid state opposition
NSW also highlighted procedural concerns about the approval process. The state association expressed disappointment that Cricket Australia had pushed forward with the decision without securing alignment across all stakeholders in the game. NSW noted that four conditions for any sale process, which had been agreed by all state chairs in June, had not been met before the board announcement.
Process concerns and unmet conditions
The Australian Cricketers’ Association added a significant constraint to the privatisation timeline. Despite Cricket Australia’s announcement, the ACA stated that privatisation cannot proceed without a new player payment model agreement being reached. This requirement means the process faces additional hurdles before any franchise sales can be finalised.
State positions on privatisation remain divided. Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia have indicated support for private investment, with Cricket Victoria fully endorsing the process and planning to sell the Melbourne Renegades entirely. Queensland has not opposed the principle of privatisation but holds concerns about the financial distribution model. Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers, along with the two Sydney-based franchises, remain reluctant to commit to the initiative.
