New Zealand head coach Rob Walter has outlined his plans to test 15-year-old Indian opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on pace and bouncy wickets during the upcoming five-match T20I series between New Zealand and India, which begins on October 22, 2026.

Sooryavanshi, born March 27, 2011, made his T20I debut against England in July 2026 and became the youngest player to score a half-century in T20I history during the Zimbabwe series in July 2026. He has drawn widespread attention following explosive performances in IPL 2025 and 2026 and at the 2026 Under-19 World Cup.

“Yes, I’d love to see him on some pace in bouncy wickets and see how different that looks. But he’s an exciting player. You’ve seen him dominate against the world’s best bowlers in the IPL. I think the challenge is always to see how that translates to different conditions and also how do we bowl to him in our conditions,” New Zealand coach Rob Walter was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“Again, secretly as a coach, you always want to see your players under a little bit of pressure and how we respond to that. So looking forward to it, if that is the case. If he’s not here, they do have a lot of very good players other than him,” he added.

What does Walter’s challenge mean for Sooryavanshi’s selection?

Sooryavanshi was part of India’s squad during the 3-0 T20I series win over Afghanistan and the two-run victory over Japan in Sano in September 2026, but he did not play in either series. Walter’s comments acknowledge that Sooryavanshi may or may not be included in India’s final squad for the New Zealand series, while making clear that New Zealand are prepared to target him with pace and bounce if he does feature.

Walter’s remarks also reflect a broader tactical awareness. New Zealand’s home conditions, which typically offer more pace and movement off the surface than subcontinental pitches, present a different challenge to a young batter who has built his reputation largely in the IPL and in conditions more familiar to Indian players.

This five-match T20I series is New Zealand’s first T20I engagement as a collective since the T20 World Cup final, in which they lost to India in Ahmedabad. Walter acknowledged that the memory of that defeat carries some weight but was clear that revenge is not the primary motivation for the squad.

Walter also addressed the controversy surrounding India’s wide call during the Japan T20I match in Sano, noting he had not followed the game closely.

“A very short segment (I watched). I saw there was some controversy around the wide ruling. But no, I didn’t watch a hell of a lot of it, to be fair. The lesser the better, I think,” Walted noted.
