Mookie Betts reached base three times on Saturday night and into Sunday morning in the rain-delayed middle game of this weekend series against the Braves. He was not alone, as the first five hitters in the Dodgers lineup reached base 14 times in 25 plate appearances, and accounted for all the team’s hits (12) and runs scored (10).
Betts extended his hit streak to six games, and his double in the fourth inning against Spencer Schwellenbach drove in a run and extended his streak to six straight games with at least one RBI. That includes a solo home run Friday that provided the winning margin in the series opener.
That six-game RBI streak matches Betts’ longest streak since joining the Dodgers, also doing so from September 2-9, 2020. His career best is seven straight games with an RBI, which he did twice in 2016 while with the Red Sox.
Shohei Ohtani holds the Dodgers record with 10 straight games with at least one run batted in, setting the mark last June 16-26. Five others reached nine straight games, including Matt Kemp in 2011.
Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but the major league record for consecutive games driving in a run is a whopping 17 games, by Cubs first baseman Ray Grimes from June 27-July 23, 1922.
