Mitchell Santner has declined a lucrative offer, which reportedly came from Adelaide Strikers, to remain focused on New Zealand’s international commitments. The 34-year-old was presented with a deal believed to be worth six figures annually for two seasons, but chose to prioritise his responsibilities with the national team. New Zealand have home white-ball and test series against India scheduled, along with a test tour of Australia coming up this year, making the timing of the decision significant for Santner’s availability.

Santner spoke about the reasoning behind his choice. The decision centred on balancing the financial appeal of franchise cricket with his role as captain of New Zealand’s white-ball sides. Playing in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 competition would have created potential conflicts with his international commitments and leadership responsibilities.

“The offer was good, I’m not going to lie. “They knew it would have to be a good offer for me to entertain it, with contracting and what would come up,” Santner said while speaking to the New Zealand Herald.

“I did entertain the thought of it, but coming back to what we’ve got coming up, even if I’m not going to play every game of test cricket, I still feel like there’s a role for me,” he added.

The captaincy factor in Santner’s decision

The New Zealand Cricket master agreement with the Players Association requires centrally contracted players to be available for the Super Smash at domestic level. This contractual obligation factored into Santner’s consideration when weighing the Adelaide Strikers proposal. Remaining on a central contract meant maintaining both his international availability and his captaincy position.

“I don’t want to give up captaincy. There were chats that it could have worked. But for me, sitting without a central contract and trying to captain, I don’t know if that would sit right at this stage. We’ve got a World Cup next year, a T20 World Cup in New Zealand the year after. That’s something I still want to be part of. And if I’m still leading the team then, awesome,” Santner said.

Contractual obligations and international availability

Other New Zealand players have taken different paths regarding franchise opportunities. Devon Conway and Lockie Ferguson have opted for casual contracts with New Zealand Cricket, a status that allows them to participate in franchise leagues while remaining available for international duty. Mark Chapman has signed a one-year Big Bash deal with another franchise.

“There’s no judgment with guys taking casual deals. We aren’t going to keep up with the money for some of these other opportunities going around. If it is a casual contract, that’s the way to keep guys invested and playing for New Zealand; that’s what we want,” Santner said.
