Middlesex have confirmed that their captain, Leus du Plooy, will not play for the club again in the 2026 season after the club missed the ECB deadline to register him as an overseas player. The error means du Plooy is unavailable for all remaining fixtures, including the Metro Bank Cup final against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge on September 20, which would be Middlesex’s first List A final since 1990.
The 31-year-old South African-born middle-order batter had been playing county cricket as a local player for several years, qualifying through his Hungarian passport. He had previously expressed a desire to represent England internationally. However, last week the club confirmed that du Plooy had declared his intention to pursue an opportunity to play international cricket for South Africa instead.
“Middlesex Cricket can confirm that captain Leus du Plooy will be unable to play for the club for the remainder of the 2026 season following clarification of his playing registration status under ECB regulations,” said the club in a statement as quoted by Cricinfo.
Under ECB regulations, a player who declares an intention to represent another country is automatically reclassified as an overseas player for domestic cricket purposes. Middlesex were unaware of this rule and did not act before the overseas player registration deadline of Sunday, September 6. The club had a vacant overseas slot available but did not realise their error until after the deadline had passed.
“As a result, Leus is required to be registered as an overseas player in order to continue playing for Middlesex. The deadline for the registration of overseas players for the 2026 season was Sunday, 6 September, meaning that it is now not possible for the club to register Leus and select him for the remainder of the season,” the statement added.

With du Plooy unavailable, Max Holden has stepped in as captain for Middlesex’s County Championship match against Durham this week. Middlesex currently sit fourth in Division Two of the Championship, 38 points adrift of the second promotion place, so their red-ball ambitions for this season are limited.
The more immediate concern is the Metro Bank Cup final on September 20. Du Plooy had not featured in Middlesex’s run to the final because he was involved in the Hundred with Manchester Super Giants. He would have been available for selection for the final but for the club’s registration error. Middlesex are chasing their first white-ball trophy in 18 years when they face Leicestershire at Trent Bridge.
On Tuesday, the club said they are continuing discussions with the ECB and the Professional Cricketers’ Association regarding du Plooy’s status, though no resolution has been indicated before the final.
