Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed Kevin Pietersen’s appointment as England’s white-ball batting mentor, describing his former teammate as an “absolute diamond” and praising his work ethic and professionalism.

Pietersen has made a surprise return to the England setup after a 12-year absence, joining Brendon McCullum’s coaching staff as a specialist mentor for the white-ball teams. He will work with the side as England build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

Vaughan, who captained Pietersen early in his international career, believes the former England batter can bring a great deal to the current setup. Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Cricket podcast, Vaughan highlighted the intensity and commitment Pietersen showed during his playing days.

“There was no-one who worked harder in my time as an England cricketer than Kevin. He’ll definitely bring that drive to the team,” said Vaughan.

Pietersen has remained an outspoken figure since his international career ended, and has previously criticised England’s preparation and training standards. Vaughan, however, believes the ECB should be credited for bringing him back despite those past comments.

“They’re willing to appoint someone who’s had a pop at them not too long ago, which I like.”

Vaughan specifically recalled Pietersen’s criticism of England’s preparation during their white-ball series in India in 2025, as well as his comments regarding the team’s preparations before the Ashes.

“Some things he said were about preparation and practice. He had a right go at them in India (in 2025) for not practising hard enough in the white-ball series, he had a pop at them before the Ashes about preparation.”

“I thought he was a diamond, an absolute diamond, you couldn’t have asked for a better person in the team.”

Vaughan raises concern over England’s high-profile coaching setup

However, Vaughan also raised one concern about England’s new-look coaching setup. With Pietersen joining McCullum, he feels the management team could become more prominent than the players themselves.

“I like it but it has a bit of a concern to me, that suddenly the management becomes more profiled than the players.”

Vaughan added that both McCullum and Pietersen are major personalities in world cricket and warned that their prominence could attract significant scrutiny if England suffer a poor run of results.

“McCullum is a big front, we know he’s under pressure because of what happened with (losing) the Test job, and you’ve got Pietersen who is a big, big name, one of the biggest names in world cricket. They are huge.”

The former England skipper also described the current setup as potentially the “most high-profile coaching team in the world”, while suggesting that England will need a strong group of coaches around their high-profile mentors.

“If you lose one or two games the fingers will be on the profiled element of the coaching. It’s probably the most high profile coaching team in the world,” he concluded.
