Before their series opener tonight in Arizona, the Mets announced that left-handed reliever A.J. Minter is set to undergo season-ending surgery for a torn lat.
Minter hit the injured list last week, and his 2025 season comes to an end after just 11.0 innings of excellent work. He had a 1.64 ERA and a 1.89 FIP over that brief span.
Combined with the loss of lefty reliever Danny Young to Tommy John surgery, the Mets were very quickly left without any left-handed relievers on their major league roster. For now, Génesis Cabrera is filling that void, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Mets try to do something else to fill that role between now and the end of the regular season.
Minter signed a two-year, $22 million deal with the Mets following the 2024 season, and he was coming back from hip surgery that affected his ability—and very likely his performance—during that season with the Braves.
