MAY 9TH 25TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE MESSAGE FROM THE GHANA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

“In the silence of remembrance, the echoes of a painful night still linger.

A night when cheers turned into cries, when celebration gave way to sorrow, and when Ghana football was plunged into mourning.

Yet through the grief, the memories of those we lost remain forever etched in our hearts.”

Twenty-five years ago, this nation suffered its worst-ever football disaster.

Twenty-five years ago, 126 passionate football souls perished at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Twenty-five years ago, a game designed to inspire healthy rivalry degenerated into chaos within the supporters’ ranks. Families lost breadwinners, parents lost sons and daughters, and an entire nation was shaken with grief.

Twenty-five years on, we honour the memories of our fallen football faithful, whose passion for the game drew them like a magnet to a totally unworthy and unexpected end.

To the families and friends of our dearly departed brothers and sisters, we continue to stand with you and pray that the Almighty God sustains you, as He has all these years.

May we never witness such a tragedy again. And may all stakeholders in Ghana football constantly remind ourselves of the need to uphold the spirit of discipline, safety, unity, and fair play in all our activities.

May the souls of our departed brothers and sisters continue to rest peacefully.
