Arsenal have made Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi a target as Mikel Arteta gears up for a key summer in moulding his squad. With the Gunners keen to bolster their rearguard ahead of another Premier League title assault next season, Guehi ranks high on their list of targets thanks to his athleticism, composure, and proven Premier League experience.

Guehi, 23, has emerged as one of the league’s most reliable young defenders. Leaving Chelsea to join Crystal Palace in 2021, he’s since made over 100 appearances for the Eagles and recently featured prominently for England under Gareth Southgate. He uses intelligence when he is defending and can play in the low block and on the set up which suits nicely with Arteta’s plan for Arsenal.

🚨 Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is once again ready to make a move to sign Marc Guehi.

However, a potential new contract for William Saliba will complicate the transfer.

The Gunners are also exploring options to increase their strength in depth behind William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães. Injuries have taken their toll in recent seasons, and with Takehiro Tomiyasu often deployed at the heart of defence, Arsenal are now targeting a natural centre-back who can rotate in and out of the side without compromising quality. Guehi’s composed, physical and tactically adaptable defending checks the boxes.

Well-suited to Arsenal’s high line and with an increasing reputation as a future England regular, Guehi looks much more than just a backup — he could ultimately dislodge holding from the starting role and serve as long-term competition and backup.

Arsenal look to have their noses in front in the race to sign Marc Guehi this summer but signing the defender will be far from easy. Crystal Palace have placed a large £50-60 million price tag on the defender and with a contract that runs until 2026, they don’t need to sell him unless their valuation is met.

Palace have long trusted and hoped to build around a solid defence, particularly with question marks surrounding the future of Oliver Glasner’s project. Guehi, with Joachim Andersen, has been at the heart of Palace’s defensive solidarity and losing him would be a major setback — unless there are further commitments to reinvest.

As well as Arsenal, Guehi has also attracted interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in recent windows. However, Arsenal’s Champions League status, tactical clarity under Arteta, and proven track record of developing young English talent may give them the edge in negotiations.

The timing might also be in Arsenal’s favor. With Crystal Palace possibly set to undergo a squad overhaul this summer and Guehi looking to solidify his England starting spot in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup, a move to a top-four side could appeal to both parties. Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s director of football, is said to be doing the spadework on potential allies now to ensure that negotiations can move quickly when the competition heats up.

From a strategic perspective, signing Marc Guehi would be one of Arsenal’s smartest moves this summer. He’s not the most glamorous attacking signing, but adding to the defense with a known Premier League quantity who isn’t due to peak for years can be a message of long-term thinking.

Strengthening their defence was a priority this summer, and the early signs suggest £60m was a fair price to pay for a Premier League- proven defender with Guehi’s profile — and he still has potential to grow further under Arteta’s tutelage. Arsenal’s injuries to defenders in the past have derailed momentum, and the addition of elite depth can prove the difference in a close title race.

If Arsenal close this deal, they are going to have one of the Premier League’s next great centre-backs — not through hyperbole, but through pure reason.
