Chelsea and Liverpool have both set their sights on Benfica ace Tomas Araujo as they look to bolster their defensive ranks in preparation for the summer window. Having failed to sign Spanish centre-back Dean Huijsen, who chose to join Real Madrid, both Premier League giants have now set their sights on the Portuguese international.

Araujo, 23, is now one of Europe’s most highly-rated young defenders. French league champions Paris Saint-Germain are also on his trail, and the war for his services is now a three-horse race among some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

A product of Benfica’s famous academy, Araujo has grown into an integral first-team regular for the Portuguese club. He has already made 67 appearances in the senior squad, delivering consistent displays in central defence. This term, he was a part of Benfica winning the Taça da Liga and now is considered ready to take a step up to a larger European league.

Araujo received his first senior international cap for Portugal in 2023, further emphasizing his rising stature. His technical skills have been praised by scouts, who have termed him a “maestro” defensively. His composure, dribbling, precise passing, and physical dueling skills have been noted by observers as exceptional traits.

Araujo himself has a €80 million (£67 million) release clause within his current deal, which simplifies the financial part of a move for any suitor club. Irrespective of the price, all three parties involved – Chelsea, Liverpool, and PSG – view him as an investment worth making due to the prospective player’s talent and his adaptability.

Although PSG now head the chase, having initiated contact with Benfica last summer at an early stage, they did not back it up with a formal approach. Their interest is still there, and they may re-enter negotiations within the next few weeks.

Chelsea are working tirelessly to sign defensive targets to re-shape their backline for new manager Enzo Maresca. Araujo is a prime target, but the Blues have also been following a number of alternatives. Among them is Ajax centre-back Jorrel Hato, a 19-year-old utility man capable of playing both centre-back and left-back.

Hato, now a first-team regular at Ajax, is worth about £40 million. Chelsea consider him to be a long-term target but could find themselves falling behind other clubs in the chase for his signature.

🚨 Chelsea are seriously considering making an offer for Jorrel Hato after missing out on Dean Huijsen.

Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Premier League centre-backs Marc Guehi and Jarrad Branthwaite. Crystal Palace defender Guehi is already familiar to the club, having graduated from the Chelsea academy. Branthwaite has had a breakthrough season at Everton and is another name near and dear to Chelsea’s list.

Liverpool are also showing interest in Araujo as part of their strategy to revamp their defence. With key players getting older or dealing with injury, the Reds are looking for a consistent, technically sound centre-back who can fit into a high defensive system. Araujo’s proficiency at playing out from the back and making contributions in possession would make him a natural in Liverpool’s system.

Despite not yet making an offer, their Anfield club are in constant communication with the player’s representatives. Their summer transfer business will await ultimate sanction from new boss Arne Slot, but Araujo is a name that remains on serious radar.

Tomas Araujo appears to be at the center of a high-profile transfer battle this summer. PSG can boast of first contact, but Chelsea and Liverpool are not out of the picture yet. With all his talent, experience, and ceiling, Araujo is a game-changer who can be a difference-making addition for any team that manages to sign him.

As the summer window approaches, everyone will be watching Benfica and their next step in what is emerging as a high-stakes transfer drama.
