Liam Delap has announced his arrival at Chelsea – and he did not hang around to make an impact. The 22-year-old striker, who arrived from Manchester City in the summer, scored his first Chelsea goal in the 3-0 victory over Espérance de Tunis at the FIFA Club World Cup. His performances, spirited and precise, have fans and coaches abuzz — and maybe even jump-started his place in Enzo Maresca’s mind a little bit.

Chelsea entered their Group D shoot-out with Espérance de Tunis needing a win to top the table—and they delivered it in style. Liam Delap scored his first competitive Chelsea goal seconds before the end of the first half and what composure he showed. Delap gathered a stray pass from Andrey Santos, switched the ball onto his right foot and drove into the bottom corner – calm, clinical, cool.

That goal was more than just a personal milestone; it put Chelsea’s stamp on the game, and ensured a perfect group stage. It came in his solid performance in the previous game, against LAFC, when Delap had provided the assist for Enzo Fernández’s goal in a 2-0 victory.

For £30 million, Chelsea signed Delap, considering him part of their long-term rebuild. The Club World Cup was the ideal chance for Maresca to try out young players and Delap stepped up to the plate. Nicolas Jackson’s suspension opened the door for Delap in the Espérance clash—and he absolutely owned the spotlight.

The forward is comfortably combining a physical presence with tactical intelligence, which suits Maresca’s pressing game. Apart from the goal, Delap impressed with his hold-up play, his movement between the lines and his link-up play with Cesare Casadei and Conor Gallagher. His energy drew some attention, and according to sources Maresca is “seriously considering” taking him to the clash against Benfica in the knockout round.

The success couldn’t have come at a better time for Delap. Chelsea’s Bohely era is focusing on youth-first recruitment and long-term player development. With Kendry Páez, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Deivid Washington also on the horizon, Delap is adding depth to a front line desperate for it.

There had been whispers Delap might be loaned out for the second half of the season but his current form could persuade club to have second thoughts. He has scored, contributed assists, and quickly adapted to Chelsea’s fluid frontline. Enzo Maresca plans to rotate his squad heavily in the coming weeks—and Delap now appears ready to take advantage of that opportunity.

Chelsea have not been the same at No.9 since Diego Costa left. It’s far too early to anoint Delap as the answer, but he does represent something different: direct running, aggression and a willingness to press defenders into mistakes. The combination of academy polish and physical maturity he possesses puts him ahead of more raw prospects.

Whether he starts against Benfica or not, one thing is certain: Liam Delap is now a bona fide part of the first-team set-up.

The chapter titled “Liam Delap Chelsea” has begun with a bang. But the club must be cautious in how they accelerate his ascent. A goal, no matter how timely or well-taken, is only a glimpse — not a promise.

Delap has the tools to succeed: Good football IQ, finishing instincts and composure. But, he still is in the early stages of development. For Chelsea, the task will be to keep him playing the correct minutes, with the correct level of mentorship, and maintain enough room for attachement that he is not thrown in at the deep end too soon.

If they do, this debut goal could be the first of many to come in blue.
