India defeated West Indies by 8 wickets in the first ODI at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, 2026. The match saw a significant performance from Kuldeep Yadav, who returned to ODI cricket after a period away from the format. Kuldeep’s bowling display proved decisive in India’s commanding victory.
Kuldeep Yadav took 4 for 40 in 10 overs and was named Player of the Match for his performance. His four wickets came at a crucial juncture, as he took four of the first five wickets to fall and engineered a collapse after the tourists had reached 135/0 in the 20th over. West Indies eventually posted 295 for 7 in their innings.
Kuldeep’s comeback came after limited opportunities in the ODI format during 2026. Out of ten ODIs that India played in the year, Kuldeep was part of just five. His performance against West Indies demonstrated his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations and provided India with a specialist spin option for their upcoming assignments.
Abhinav Mukund believes that if Kuldeep Yadav continues the form he showed in the first ODI against the West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, September 27, he will cement his place as India’s premier spinner for the 2027 World Cup.
“The massive positive for India is the re-emergence of Kuldeep Yadav. Yes, India will have Axar Patel and Washington Sundar coming back. But who’s their specialist spinner for South Africa? Kuldeep Yadav will do wonders if he continues this form over the course of the next year or so. If he does, he’ll seal his spot for next year’s World Cup,” Mukund said on his Instagram handle.
India are still trying to lock in their best combination: Mukund
India’s selection committee is actively experimenting with squad combinations ahead of the next World Cup. The backing of emerging players like Naman Dhir, who made his ODI debut in this match, reflects the team management’s approach to identifying the best possible combination for the tournament.
“For the ODI World Cup, India are still trying to lock in their best combination. With that combination in mind, India are trying a few options. Hence, Naman Dhir made his debut and bowled a few overs,” Mukund said.
