After a brutal loss to the Rays on Friday night, the Mets got some good news: Kodai Senga has only a Grade 1 hamstring strain, and will be re-evaluated in 14 days. Grade 1 is the least severe strain possible, and the Mets look to have dodged their ace missing too much time.
Senga strained his hamstring in the series finale with the Nationals on Friday afternoon. Here is how our Vasilis Drimalitis described the injury shortly after it occurred:
The scary moment occurred in the sixth, when Pete Alonso fielded a grounder hit by CJ Abrams and threw the ball high to first. Senga snagged the errant throw and recorded the out, but landed hard on first base and immediately fell to the ground. He walked off under his own power, but it was clear he was in a bit of pain heading off the field. .
After Alonso looked absolutely devastated that his throw could have caused an injury to his pitcher, Senga sent translator Hiro Fujiwara to speak with Alonso, who assured him that Senga felt the hamstring pull before Alonso even threw the ball. Whether this is true or just Senga being a good, compassionate teammate is unknown.
