Fans witnessed glimpses of a vintage MS Dhoni finish at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata today, in the match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Dhoni came to bat in the 13th over after Dewald Brevis got out. At that moment, the score was 127-6, and CSK needed 54 runs to win.

Fans have seen Dhoni in this situation many times before, and today he did nothing different from what he usually does in such circumstances — take the game deep. He focused on taking singles while Shivam Dube kept the scoreboard ticking from the other end. At the end of the 19th over, Dhoni’s score was 10 off 15 balls. But on the very first ball of the final over, he heaved a delivery from Andre Russell over deep mid-wicket for a six, almost sealing the match right there.

ā€œDid not want to give wickets to Sunil and Varun.ā€ – MS Dhoni

Dhoni had a fantastic partnership with Dube, adding 43 runs off 39 balls. Both batters kept their calm, avoided fancy shots, and trusted in singles and doubles — exactly what the situation demanded. And as everyone knows, Dhoni is a master at that. In the end, Dhoni remained unbeaten on 17 off 18 balls, at a strike rate of 94.44, with his only boundary being that decisive six.

During the post-match presentation, Dhoni said: ā€œDid not want to give wickets to Sunil and Varun. It was holding for the spinners, but for the pacers, it was not that great and difficult for them to get away. Not to forget that I was the last batter, the tension becomes a lot (if I get out), so rotating strike (gets tougher).ā€
