As the Black Queens prepare to take on hosts Morocco in the semi-final of WAFCON 2024, Head Coach Kim Björkegren remains focused, composed, and confident in his team’s progress and ability.

“It’s a little bit different, the way you have to think in tournaments like this,” Björkegren explained. “You have to be there every single day mentally, tactically, physically. But the positive side is how quickly you see the development. I think we’re a better team now than we were one or two months ago.” Kim Lars said.

Since taking over as Ghana’s head coach, Björkegren has guided the team through a steady upward trajectory. His emphasis on collective preparation, trust in his players, and attention to detail have been key to the Black Queens’ performance so far.

Even with concerns around player recovery after a demanding schedule, the coach remains undeterred. “I believe in my players. I’ve seen them take huge steps in just a couple of weeks,” he said. “This is a group that’s grown stronger with every match.”

Reflecting on his journey with Ghana, he recalled, “My first game as coach was against Liverpool. It was tight, we lost in the final minute, but even then, I saw potential.”

Now, with Morocco in their sights, Björkegren has put together what he believes is the most realistic and strategic game plan yet, one that leverages Ghana’s strengths and exposes weaknesses in the Moroccan side.

“I study everything. I watch the patterns, the matchups. I like to feel in control, even if I’m not the one on the pitch. That’s where the planning with my staff comes in,” he noted.

Facing the host nation is never easy, and he acknowledges the unique pressure that comes with playing against a home crowd. “Sure, a stadium packed with 21,000 fans can be intimidating, but it can also work the other way. If we stay calm and focused, we can silence that crowd.”

Björkegren’s final words echoed belief and national pride: “This game means a lot to the country. We’re here to represent Ghana. We know it’s going to be tough, but we’re ready. We will give it everything.” he added.
