Kendry Paez saga heats up as Chelsea wonderkid grows unhappy

Kendry Paez, Chelsea’s much-hyped teenage addition, has already courted controversy despite not even kicking a ball for the first team. The 17-year-old Ecuadorian midfielder, who plans to complete a move to Stamford Bridge in 2025 when he reaches the age of 18, has become disillusioned with the Blues and how they are approaching his progression and long term prospects.

Paez, who plays for Ecuador’s independiente del Valle, was signed by Chelsea in 2023 for a reported fee of around £17.5 million.  The transfer was celebrated as one more sign of the club’s strategic shift to sign young talent from around the world, as it had also been the case in previous deals such as Andrey Santos and Angelo Gabriel. But those sources close to the player believe the situation has turned “very, very heated and tense” because there is no clarity about how he will progress to the front line.

Paez and his representatives have reportedly grown frustrated at being excluded from those talks, with Chelsea allegedly failing to lay out a clear plan for his integration into the squad once he arrives. Although he signed the initial contract with a promise of first-team opportunities and tutelage, even those terms now seem uncertain at a club overloaded with talent and lacking a defined vision on the touchline.

🚨 It’s understood Kendry Páez’s preference would be to be around Chelsea’s 1st team next season; the club is considering what is best for his progress! Andrey Santos has been used as an example of how a temporary stay at Strasbourg can be beneficial.

Paez continues to perform well for both club and country—he has already represented Ecuador’s senior national side—but his long-term prospects at Chelsea seem shaky before they’ve even begun. The teenager reportedly feels “disconnected” from the club and increasingly worries that his potential might stagnate in London.

The situation with Paez mirrors a wider problem at Chelsea, which is that they have an aggressive recruitment policy that has seen a huge number of talented young players recruited with no obvious pathway to the first team. Chelsea scheduled Paez’s arrival for 2025, but the team already faces a clog of midfielders competing for minutes, such as Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Cesare Casadei.

The Chelsea hierarchy still believe in Paez, who is back in the building. Club officials have maintained the chain-of-years belief in player and strategy to assess his integration during pre-season once he joins the senior squad. But, there are lingering questions over whether that opportunity will arrive in time for it to work for the player and his camp.

Compounding the sense of upheaval is the uncertainty over the managerial situation at Stamford Bridge. With Enzo Maresca now in charge, Chelsea’s internal model could change once more. Maresca holds a reputation for promoting talent from the Primavera, but he has not indicated whether he views Paez as a priority or a future prospect.

European competition is possibly also complicating things. Paez remains contracted to Chelsea, but if his frustration continues, clubs offering a clearer pathway to senior level may come calling with better development opportunities.

Kendry Paez is undeniably one of the most exciting young midfielders in South America. His vision, balance and technique have seen him gain senior international caps and world-wide acclaim before his twenties. But a player of his quality needs structure, trust, and a club that nurtures rather than shelves talent.

Chelsea’s issue isn’t so much signing talent — it’s knowing what to do with it. But the club must move quickly if they want to avoid another case of a promising young player falling between the cracks. The right line of communication, a tangible plan for his development, and a first-team guarantee could change that. Without it, Paez may already be contemplating a future that doesn’t involve blue.
