Jos Buttler became the first batter in the history of T20 cricket to reach 15,000 runs, achieving the milestone during England’s second T20I against Sri Lanka at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on September 17, 2026. Buttler reached the landmark with a single off Eshan Malinga in the fifth over of England’s run chase, etching his name into the record books in front of a home crowd.

In doing so, Buttler surpassed Kieron Pollard to become the highest run-scorer in T20 cricket across all competitions. Pollard has amassed 14,999 runs from 754 T20 matches at an average of 31.71, while Buttler now stands at 15,000 runs from 528 matches, averaging 35.46 at a strike rate of 147.46. Buttler has also struck nine centuries and 107 fifties across his T20 career, underlining the consistency that has defined his time in the format.

England went on to win the match by six wickets, chasing down Sri Lanka’s 145/9 in just 12.1 overs to finish on 146/4. Liam Dawson was named Player of the Match for his three-wicket haul. The result gave England an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

How does Buttler’s T20 record compare to Pollard’s?

Buttler’s achievement is made more remarkable when placed alongside Pollard’s numbers. The West Indian all-rounder played 671 T20 innings to accumulate 14,999 runs. Buttler has reached 15,000 runs in 174 fewer innings, reflecting a more efficient and aggressive approach at the crease.

Buttler’s 107 fifties and nine centuries in T20 cricket further set him apart. His career has spanned a wide range of franchises and competitions, including stints with England, Lancashire, Manchester Originals, Manchester Super Giants, Gujarat Titans, Somerset, Paarl Royals, Mumbai Indians, Sydney Thunder, Comilla Victorians, Durban’s Super Giants, Melbourne Renegades and England Lions, giving him exposure to conditions and bowling attacks across the globe.

What is the series context heading into the final T20I?

England’s victory at Sophia Gardens extended their T20I win streak over Sri Lanka to 14 matches, underscoring their dominance in this fixture. With a 2-0 lead already secured, the series is won, and the third and final T20I will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester on September 19, 2026.
