New Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has admitted he wanted fresh legs on the pitch as the key reason for substituting Cristiano Ronaldo after his disallowed goal. He stated that the attackers needed to be the first line of defence, and that change was needed.
Speaking to the media after the 1-0 win over Wales, Jesus said that he wanted to dominate the game for the last 25 minutes and did not see much happening in attack. He believed it was best to take off Ronaldo and bring on Gonçalo Ramos, as it would help with the press up front. He said:
