João Pedro transfer race: Chelsea vs Newcastle

Premier League clubs are racing to sign players in the summer transfer window. One of the most-taken-about figures is Brighton’s João Pedro. With Chelsea and Newcastle both well in the mix for what already looks like a red-hot João Pedro transfer race, the two clubs will want to add an attacker or two to their ranks before the start of the 2025/26 season.

Chelsea’s pursuit of João Pedro – another example of a pattern emerging under Enzo Maresca for versatile, technically proficient attacking options. The Brazilian is now a priority target and the club’s recruitment team sanctioned a move earlier this month according to reports. Chelsea’s groundwork with Brighton in previous talks – as with the Levi Colwill situation – means they have a direct line to the Seagulls.

With 20 goal contributions last season, he has the mixed profile for which Chelsea are in the market. Comfortable both as a No. 10 and as a second striker or even a wide player, his tactical intelligence and pressing game offers a seamless fit in Maresca’s high-possession, high-press system.

Financially, Chelsea would have to navigate very carefully. Brighton are loathe to sell unless they receive an offer in excess of £60m. But Chelsea’s readiness to include a player in exchange or structured payments may give them the edge. João Pedro is reportedly excited by the ruling cause of the Chelsea project, including the youthful makeover and the possibility of European football next season.

Though the Blues also track forwards like Jhon Durán and Serhou Guirassy, Pedro holds the advantage here due to his Premier League experience. Sources indicate Chelsea plan to speed things up in the coming days to avoid losing ground.

Newcastle have been long-term admirers of João Pedro and attempted to sign him from Watford before he moved to Brighton. Their interest has never faded, as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his squad after a tough, injury-hit campaign, and the Magpies now prepare to go back in for their former target.

The club’s approach in this window is focusing upon young, Premier League-proven talent. João Pedro fits the bill perfectly — not only as a goal scorer but as a link-up man who can operate fluidly alongside Alexander Isak or Anthony Gordon. His capacity to stretch — and push past — defences, drop deep and carry the ball forward is exactly what Howe wants.

Newcastle, though, are understood to have made initial contact with Pedro’s representatives and are willing to meet Brighton’s valuation. Newcastle, who are conscious of Financial Fair Play, are looking at sales to make room for this move. If Newcastle offload Callum Wilson, they could push through the Pedro deal a bit more swiftly—but his future still remains unclear.

For their part, Brighton are in no hurry to sell but are aware they cannot keep the player if a substantial offer comes in. João Pedro is believed to be receptive to the advances of both clubs and the next few weeks will be pivotal in the race for his signature.

This João Pedro transfer race has the potential to go to the wire. Chelsea slightly lead the race thanks to their project and tactical fit, but no one should underestimate Newcastle’s determination and funds. They can both offer him regular first team action, tactical importance and potential long term development.

The thing that could perhaps make the difference is the timing. Once the first club has gone on paper with a firm bid, word could spread faster. With just a month to go until pre-season, neither Chelsea nor Newcastle can hang around. The next moves from either will show who really sees João Pedro as irreplaceable — and who’s just dabbling.
