Chelsea have identified Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite transfer as their first-choice defender this summer. But the Toffees’ strong position and the player’s hunger have created a slur of complications for this transfer . The 22-year-old England international is under consideration from the best clubs in Europe after an impressive season and must make a decision about his future amid interest from Stamford Bridge.

Everton manager David Moyes has publicly stated that Everton “hold all the cards” in any negotiations. Branthwaite signed a contract in October 2022 which runs for 3 years with the option of a further years. It kept him tied to Goodison Park until 2027. While Moyes suggested Everton had sold plenty of top players before, he went on to state Branthwaite was not one he “would want to lose” . And in a position of strength economically, after Everton’s previous financial situation under the Friedkin Group’s ownership, they could ask for £70-80 million for their player – even after rejecting a £50m bid from Manchester United last summer , they have every right to further determine the valuation of Branthwaite.

A major twist came up after Branthwaite missed out on an unexpected inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in early 2025. Reports say the snub has made the defender prioritize Champions League football next season – a major positive for Chelsea, as they finished in the top four of the Premier League. Everton, having just narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League, can offer no European football; thus, increasing the appeal for Branthwaite to leave. However, Everton sources played down the reported links to Liverpool labelling it as ‘strange’, and confirmed rivals headed no contact had been made.

Chelsea sees Branthwaite as part of an overall strategy of rebuilding to find their young, best potential centre backs. According to Sky Sports they listed him alongside Marc Guehi & Jorrel Hato, and Guehi a former Chelsea academy graduate. Chelsea feel urgency, mainly because of a planned cleared out. With 14 other players receive development funding to purchase new signings. The likes of editions like Axel Disasi & Trevoh Chalobah, and even on the list Mendoza Veiga. The signing of Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg added another option for Chelsea. But their priority focus is Branthwaite, due to his left footed nature and Premier League experience

Chelsea are not the only club keen to sign Branthwaite. As much as Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring his progress. Moreover, there is a tentative interest from Manchester United as well. Everton are holding out for £80 million which could be a significant amount of money for Chelsea. Chelsea, is at times, reluctant to spend that amount given Everton have put him at that price. Given that Chelsea is also gauging risk to a potential breach of profit and sustainability rules, this could be problematic. Personal terms and willingness to force through a transfer could get in the way, but with Branthwaite’s absence from the England squad adds reduced constraints for Everton

Chelsea should be able to afford the player’s potential transfer amount if players are on sale. Chelsea’s Chalobah, Disasi and others could certainly ensure Chelsea pocket a sizable amount of funds transfer. Branthwaite finds the attraction of playing in the UCL at Chelsea with a project led by Enzo Maresca exciting. But Everton still holds the option to force the player to stay. While the risk of staying at Everton will not amount to much in case Chelsea being resolute on the price.

As we enter the summer window in August Branthwaite’s future highlights the contrasting forces of player. It implies the ambition vs a club’s resolve for player retention. Distance will surely be a topic in question if push comes to shove. But it will be a point of expectation at Chelsea as much as from Everton’s perspective.
