Newlands, Cape Town, was the setting for a chastening end to Australia’s tour of South Africa, as the Proteas completed a 2-1 series victory in the 3rd Test that concluded on October 31, 2026.

Chasing 288 runs to win, Pat Cummins’ side were bowled out for 111 in their second innings, handing South Africa a series triumph that also had significant consequences on the ICC World Test Championship points table. The series loss saw Australia drop to No. 3 on the ICC World Test Championship points table, while South Africa climbed to No. 1 courtesy of the result.

Speaking after the defeat, former Australia opener David Warner did not spare his compatriots. He described the performance as unbecoming of the Australian side and lambasted the batting unit for their displays across the series.

“It is terrible. It is un-Australian. There is no fight whatsoever. It is disgraceful. The batters have let the bowlers down all series. Matt Renshaw showed fight in that first Test, but I think the batters have been utterly disgraceful. It is deplorable,” Warner said on Fox Cricket.

How did Australia’s batting collapse unfold at Cape Town?

Australia had given themselves a platform heading into the final stages of the match, having taken a 100-run first-innings lead over South Africa at Newlands. Josh Inglis, who scored a superb century, was central to that effort. Matt Renshaw, who also scored 74 in the first innings, was dismissed for a duck in the second innings, falling to a delivery down the leg side. This dismissal on just the third ball of the innings began the Aussie procession. Warner remarked on the nature of the dismissal.

“Renshaw was burgled down the leg side. It is on the line and this is the way they play,” Warner said.

Simon Harmer was the chief destroyer in Australia’s second innings, claiming six wickets as the tourists crumbled to 111 all out, well short of the 288-run target. Harmer finished with ten for the match, after having taken four in the first innings as well. Kagiso Rabada chipped in with three wickets, breaking the game open with the wickets of the top three. Australia’s chase unravelled through a combination of poor shot selection and costly errors in the field.

What does the series result mean for South Africa and Australia in the ICC World Test Championship?

South Africa‘s 2-1 series win carried immediate weight in the ICC World Test Championship standings. The Proteas climbed to the top of the points table following the Cape Town victory, a significant shift in the context of the ongoing championship cycle. Australia, who had entered the series among the leading sides, slipped to No. 3 as a direct consequence of the defeat.

For Cummins and his squad, the result represents a setback not only in terms of the series outcome but also in their pursuit of ICC World Test Championship qualification. The batting unit’s inability to chase 288 at Newlands, after holding a 100-run first-innings advantage, will be a particular concern for Australian selectors heading into their next assignment, a marquee four-match home Test series against the dominant New Zealand side.
