'It’s kind of funny and a bit of rubbish' - Ambati Rayudu goes against Akash Singh's 'chit' celebration after three-for against CSK

Akash Singh impressed all Lucknow Super Giants fans with his brilliant three-wicket haul against Chennai Super Kings in Match 59 of IPL 2026 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium. After the exceptional bowling performance, the cricketer pulled out a chit note from his trousers’ pocket, which read, “Akki on Fire. Akash knows how to take wickets in a T20 game.”

The move to pull out a chit after the impressive spell caught the attention of many, who lauded the pacer. However, former CSK cricketer Ambati Rayudu was clearly disappointed with the act. In fact, he nullified it, saying that the decision to pull off such antics is not only but also quite rubbish, according to the cricketer-turned-commentator.

“I just want to know at what point today he thought, ‘hey this will be awesome, like I’ll pull this out on TV, everybody will think I’m cool. I also want to know who his friends that he told backed him up and said that would be a great idea. I just think that’s his manifestation, it may not go down well with a lot of people, but it’s kind of funny and a bit of rubbish,” he told ESPNcricinfo.

Former New Zealand cricketer Mitchell McClenaghan, who was also a part of the discussion alongside Rayudu, echoed the sentiment. McClenaghan reckoned that Akash Singh is still quite young in his IPL career, and people have barely taken a note of his talent. The left-arm pacer of his time believes that the match officials and organisers should seriously think about putting a stop to allowing chits.

“I’m actually flabbergasted with some of this generation that’s coming through, like you know putting your fingers up on your first real performance on the IPL when you’ve only just turned up on the scene, we’ve only just learnt your name. It’s like jeez how many haters have you got bro, you’ve played four games. I just find it all fascinating, it’s really interesting,” he expressed.

“I think they should ban this chit business; it’s absolute nonsense. I don’t think they’re supposed to bring chits anyway,” McClenaghan concluded.

For the unversed, Akash Singh isn’t the first cricketer to have done the chit act in the IPL. Abhishek Sharma did it famously for the first time in 2025. The trend has picked up a lot in 2026, with cricketers like Urvil Patel and Raghu Sharma also making headlines for their peculiar form of celebrating individual milestones in their careers in the biggest league in the world.
