Black Starlets Head Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum has described Ghana’s participation in the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations as a proud milestone in his coaching journey, calling the tournament the biggest international stage of his career.

Speaking ahead of Ghana’s opening game at the tournament in Rabat, Dr. Ogum reflected on the significance of leading the Black Starlets at one of Africa’s biggest youth football competitions.

“It is a very proud moment for me to be at the AFCON. This is the biggest international stage in my coaching career so far, and I feel honoured to have this opportunity to represent Ghana,” he said.

The former club coach expressed deep appreciation to the Ghana Football Association for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Starlets and supporting the technical team throughout the qualification and preparation process.

“I want to thank the Ghana Football Association for the confidence they have shown in me by appointing me as head coach of the Black Starlets. The support from the GFA, management committee, my technical team and everyone around the team has been tremendous and has helped us come this far.”

Dr. Ogum also praised the commitment and dedication of the players during preparations for the tournament, insisting the team is ready to compete strongly against the best teams on the continent.

“The boys have worked very hard from the beginning of the qualifiers until now. They have shown discipline, determination, and a strong desire to succeed. We know the challenge ahead is difficult, but we are prepared to give our best for Ghana.”

The Black Starlets secured qualification to the tournament after finishing runners-up at the WAFU Zone B Championship and have since engaged in a series of preparatory matches against Ivory Coast and Mali ahead of the AFCON.

For Dr. Ogum, the tournament represents not only a personal achievement but also an opportunity to contribute to Ghana’s proud football history.

“Coaching Ghana at this level comes with responsibility because of the history and expectations attached to the Black Starlets. We are motivated to make the nation proud and compete at the highest level.”

The Black Starlets are aiming to make a strong impression at the tournament while also targeting qualification to the FIFA U17 World Cup later this year.
