Kieron Pollard has been appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians, marking a significant transition in his 16-year association with the franchise. The West Indian all-rounder joined Mumbai Indians as a 22-year-old player and has now stepped into a leadership position after serving as Batting Coach. His elevation reflects the franchise’s confidence in his deep understanding of the team’s identity and the rigorous demands of competing at the highest level of T20 cricket.
Nita M. Ambani, Co-owner of Mumbai Indians, confirmed the appointment and outlined Pollard’s remarkable journey within the OneFamily. She emphasised that Pollard has become an integral part of the franchise over the past sixteen years, delivering unforgettable moments as a player and sharing his expertise, passion and profound understanding of the game as a coach.
“Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game. We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as Head Coach,” Nita Ambani said in a statement released by MI.
Ambani added further confidence in Pollard’s appointment, highlighting his intimate knowledge of what the MI jersey represents and the expectations of the Paltan.
“Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role. I wish him every success as he leads the team into its next chapter,” she said.
Pollard’s experience shapes his new role
Pollard brings exceptional understanding of Mumbai Indians‘ culture and the rigorous expectations of performing at the highest level. His experience as a central figure in T20 cricket’s evolution provides valuable perspective on the game’s shifting tactical landscape and the demands of an increasingly competitive environment. His journey at the franchise as both a player and, more recently, in the Batting Coach role positions him uniquely to build on the strong foundation that has driven Mumbai Indians’ success.
Pollard expressed his honour at taking on the role and his deep connection to the franchise.
“It is a honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold,” Pollard said.
Pollard acknowledged the trust placed in him by the Ambani family and outlined his vision for the team’s future.
“I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me. I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate,” he added.
Pollard’s appointment underscores Mumbai Indians’ commitment to preserving the team’s legacy while continuing to develop emerging talent and strengthen the franchise’s competitive culture. His leadership will draw on experience gained during Mumbai Indians’ most successful years, combined with his ambition to guide the team through its next phase of growth and achievement.
