The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a two-wicket win from the jaws of defeat against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in a nervy finish to Match 54 of the 2026 Indian Premier League. The win had huge implications for the points table, with the defending champions now finding themselves at the top of the standings while MI are officially out of playoff reckoning.

After being put into bat first, MI registered 166 runs from their quota of 20 overs. Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma returned to form with notable scores of 47 and 57, respectively, whilst the rest of the batting lineup fell victim to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The seamer continued his excellent tournament, taking four wickets whilst conceding just 23 runs.

In reply, RCB chased down the total on the final delivery after Rasikh Salam Dar ran two on the last ball to see his side through. Krunal Pandya, however, was the star of the run chase. Battling through painful cramps and fatigue, the Baroda all-rounder scored a 46-ball 73 to make sure his side were always in the game despite losing the likes of Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar early in the innings.

As has been the case with all IPL matches this season, RCB vs MI also saw players from both teams reach personal milestones in their respective T20 and IPL careers.

Here are the most important stats and milestones from Match 54:

  • Deepak Chahar: Played his 100th game in his IPL career
  • Corbin Bosch: First bowler to bowl a maiden over in middle overs (7-15) in IPL 2026
  • Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: Joint-most matches played in the IPL (278*)
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Joint-most 3-wicket hauls in an IPL season (6)
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Second-most IPL seasons with 20+ wickets (4)
  • Krunal Pandya: Scored his 10th fifty in his T20 career
  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Most wickets picked in powerplay in IPL 2026 (22*)
  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Fourth consecutive victory over the Mumbai Indians in the IPL
