Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer takes Sri Lanka Cricket to court for legal battle

Sri Lanka right-arm pacer Nuwan Thushara has reportedly taken legal action against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), seeking an expedited issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. He currently represents Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL.

As per reports, Thushara filed a petition in the Colombo District Court on Thursday,  April 2, requesting a directive to compel SLC to grant him the clearance. The matter has been listed for its first hearing on April 9.

In his legal filing, the Lankan fast bowler has named several top officials as defendants, including SLC president Shammi Silva, secretary Bandula Dissanayake, treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda, and CEO Ashley de Silva. The development comes after SLC reportedly withheld the NOC for his IPL participation citing fitness concerns.

The board stated that Thushara did not meet the required physical standards, which led to the decision to deny him clearance for overseas participation.   However, the right-arm pacer has strongly contested the claim, asserting that his fitness levels remain consistent with his career standards.

He has also expressed concern that the absence of an NOC could adversely impact his opportunities in global franchise leagues. Thushara was bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for INR 1.60 crore ahead of the season, making the situation even more significant for both the player and the franchise.

With the legal route now in play, all eyes will be on the upcoming hearing, which could determine whether Thushara gets the green signal to feature in IPL 2026.

Known for his slingy bowling action just like Lasith Malinga, Thushara has been a prominent figure in Sri Lanka’s T20I set-up lately. Even in the IPL, he has done decently well, picking up nine wickets in eight wickets. He was part of the IPL winning squad of RCB last season.
