IPL 2026: MS Dhoni likely to miss MI clash, targeting return vs GT on April 26

In a major development ahead of the highly-anticipated clash between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is unlikely to feature in the April 23 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, extending the wait for his return a little longer in IPL 2026.

Dhoni is still recovering from a calf strain and despite undergoing intense training sessions in the lead-up to the game, he has not attained full match fitness, as reported by RevSportz. The development comes as a setback for fans eagerly waiting to see the iconic batter in action in the ongoing season of IPL.

While the 44-year-old has been putting in the hard yards during practice, the team management appears to be taking a cautious approach regarding his return. It is understood that Dhoni is being monitored closely, and no risks are being taken with his fitness at this stage of the tournament.

However, there is a positive update for CSK supporters, as Dhoni is expected to make his comeback in the upcoming fixture against Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 26.

Before this marquee clash against Mumbai Indians, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was asked about MS Dhoni’s possible role in the set-up and his injury update.

“We were playing a practice match; that’s when he [MS Dhoni] snapped his calf, and then he wasn’t able to run as comfortably as he wanted to,” the CSK captain was quoted as saying by India TV.

“And I think after that it was just about him seeing some of the youngsters playing in practice games or in match simulations where he felt confident enough about them, who are ready and who have that ability to play in the IPL. And, after that, it was just about taking time on his recovery, and slowly, slowly he’s getting there. Never know, maybe next game, maybe after that, but definitely one day for sure,” Gaikwad continued.

The five-time IPL champions CSK are having a mixed season so far in the 2026 edition. They currently are at the eighth position in the points table with just two wins and four losses in six matches. Dhoni’s inclusion will be invaluable to the side with his immense experience.
