The Punjab Kings beat the Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in Match 24 of the 2026 Indian Premier League at the Wankhede Stadium on April 16.

Being put into bat at their home ground, the five-time champions made 195/6 in their 20 overs after an initial hiccup in the powerplay. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav off two consecutive balls.

Naman Dhir joined the star of the evening, Quinton de Kock, and once the pair stabilised the innings, they took the charge. The stumper-batter, in his first game back at MI, finished unbeaten on 112 off just 60. Dhir finished with 50 off 31 balls as some brilliant death-bowling from the Punjab bowlers helped restrict them to a total below 200 on a belter of a pitch. Arshdeep finished with figures of 3/22 in his four overs.

In response, the Punjab Kings started in fine fashion despite losing Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly to the mystery spin of Allah Ghazanfar. Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer steadied the ship, stitching a brilliant 139-run stand off just 67 balls, cruising through the middle-overs. Shreyas Iyer fell for 66 off just 35 balls, his third consecutive half-century. Prabhsimran finished unbeaten on 83 along with Marcus Stoinis on 10, as the Punjab Kings reached home with 21 balls to spare, extending their unbeaten start to IPL 2026.

Key moments of the match:

1. De Kock has a homecoming for the ages

Talk about magnificent returns. Injury to the maverick Rohit Sharma saw Quinton de Kock make his first appearance for the Mumbai Indians after his return to the side. What followed was a masterful innings, an exhibition of the destructive elegance associated with de Kock. After a slow start to the powerplay, he teed off in the middle overs and carried on till the end as he finished unbeaten on 112 off just 60 balls. This was his third century in the IPL and first for the team, where he played a vital role at the top in lifting two IPL titles. He stitched a brilliant 122-run partnership with Naman Dhir, which stabilised the ship for the Mumbai Indians after a slow powerplay.

2. Arshdeep silences critics in the powerplay

Arshdeep Singh had not taken a wicket in the powerplay in IPL 2026 until he stepped foot at the Wankhede. Taking the new ball, he started by bowling a brilliant one-run over to start the proceedings for the Punjab Kings. Laden with beautifully-shaped outswingers, Ryan Rickelton found it difficult to get bat on ball. He followed that up with a two-wicket over, where he dismissed Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav in successive deliveries. He finished the powerplay with figures of 2/4, and came back to bowl with control in the death overs, finishing the game with figures of 3/22.

3. Prabhsimran and Shreyas take the game away from MI

Mumbai Indians picked up two early wickets in the powerplay, but Prabhsimran Singh, joined by Shreyas Iyer, ensured that the Mumbai Indians were not able to build on that momentum. The pair took the attack to the Mumbai bowlers and ensured that they were cruising through the middle overs. They chipped away at the total and made sure that as each over went on, the asking rate kept getting lower. Both batters finished with half-centuries, as their 139-run stand helped the Kings make light work of the total. Iyer fell for 66, but Prabshimran carried on, finishing unbeaten on 80.
