Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by seven wickets to keep themselves afloat in the competition.

Shreyas Iyer won the toss on Saturday, May 23, at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium and opted to field first. His pace spearhead Arshdeep Singh was taken to the cleaners by Josh Inglis inside the power play. However, Arshin Kulkarni and Nicholas Pooran were dismissed cheaply.

Ayush Badoni played a breathtaking knock of 43 runs off 18 balls. Rishabh Pant got a start but was dismissed at the time when he would have wanted to shift gears. Inglis was eventually dismissed by Shashank Singh for 72 off 44 deliveries. In the end, Abdul Samad remained unbeaten on 37 off 20 balls to take LSG to 196/6 in 20 overs.

In reply, Mohammed Shami struck off the first ball of the innings, sending Priyansh Arya packing. Cooper Connolly got off to a quick start before Shami dismissed him in his second over.

Shreyas Iyer joined forces with Prabhsimran Singh and the right-handed duo amassed a 140-run stand off 76 balls to take their team to the brink. After Arjun Tendulkar dismissed Prabhsimran with a searing yorker in the 15th over, Shreyas took the onus upon himself to take his team home.

He hit three sixes in the 16th over, which was bowled by Shami. Eventually, the 31-year-old hit Mohsin Khan for a six off the last ball of the 18th over to secure a comprehensive win.

Key moments of the game:

Josh Inglis plays a blinder

Josh Inglis took the attack to the Punjab bowlers from the word go. In the absence of Mitchell Marsh, he took the responsibility himself of getting his team off to a flying start. Despite losing two early wickets, Inglis’ knock helped LSG keep the momentum. His 72-run knock comprised of nine fours and two sixes.

Yuzvendra Chahal rolls back the years

Yuzvendra Chahal has not had a great campaign this season in the IPL. However, in the all-important clash, he used his experience and bowled a brilliant spell through the middle overs. The veteran leg-spinner took the big wickets of Ayush Badoni and Pant to break the momentum in LSG’s innings.

Shreyas Iyer slams maiden IPL ton

After six consecutive defeats, Punjab needed their captain to step up and show the way. Shreyas Iyer did just that as he notched up his maiden IPL century off just 51 balls. He belted 11 fours and five sixes during his 101-run unbeaten knock. His partnership with Prabhsimran Singh proved to be match-winning.
