IPL 2026: ‘Having those few games off really did me a good’ - Finn Allen opens up after match winning knock vs GT

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Finn Allen delivered yet another explosive innings in IPL 2026, smashing a breathtaking 93 off just 35 deliveries against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 60 at Eden Gardens on Saturday, May 17.

His blistering knock played a crucial role in keeping KKR’s playoff hopes alive with a commanding 29-run victory over one of the strongest bowling attacks in the tournament. The New Zealand batter had endured a lean patch in April, managing only 81 runs in five innings before being dropped from the playing XI.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Allen admitted that the phase had mentally affected him. The aggressive right-hander revealed that being sidelined actually helped him reset mentally and rediscover his love for batting.

“I was probably a shell of a human for a bit there. And it was all self-inflicted. I think, you know, when you go out of the side, you have time to relax and take a breath and, I guess, look at things from a different perspective. I love playing cricket. I love batting. And I probably wasn’t enjoying it as much as I should have at the time, because I was putting so much pressure on myself,” he exclaimed.

Allen added that the short break away from the XI proved to be a valuable learning experience for him.

“So yeah, look, having those few games off really did me a good thing. And yeah, it’s a great learning for sure.”

Since returning to the side, the Kiwi opener has looked like a completely transformed batter. In May alone, he has registered scores of 29, 100*, 18, and 93, showcasing the fearless brand of cricket he is known for. His recent performances have also reminded fans of his stunning unbeaten century in the T20 World Cup semifinal against South Africa earlier this year at the same venue.

Against GT, Allen took on the challenge despite difficult batting conditions early in the innings and the presence of premier new-ball bowlers. Explaining his approach, the 27-year-old said he focused on capitalising on scoring opportunities while also ensuring he stayed at the crease.

“Look, I think it depends on the wicket, right? Today it was definitely tricky at the start. We knew that was going to be the case. Two of probably the best opening bowlers in the comp as well. So I think, to be honest, I had a plan of just hit what I got.  And if I didn’t get the ball, I wanted just try and get off strike or just not get out really,” he concluded.

With Allen rediscovering his confidence at the perfect time, KKR will hope their explosive opener can continue his rich vein of form as the defending champions push for a playoff spot in the business end of IPL 2026.
