The 58th match of the ongoing IPL 2025 between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was suspended. The fixture, held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala, started after a rain delay, but eventually had to be called off due to a floodlight failure.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bat first. His decision seemed to pay off immediately as openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh gave the team a flying start. The duo added 122 runs for the first wicket in just 10.1 overs. Priyansh Arya smashed 70 off just 34 balls before falling to T Natarajan. Prabhsimran Singh was still unbeaten on 50 off 28 balls when the game was suddenly halted.
The interruption was initially unclear, but it was soon revealed that a floodlight malfunction had caused the pause in play. After several minutes of inspection and delay, the game was officially called off due to the issue. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later issued a formal statement explaining the situation.
Both PBKS and DC remain in contention for the IPL 2025 playoffs
Their statement read: “The Punjab Kings v Delhi Capitals match (Match #58) in Tata IPL was forced to be abandoned due to a significant technical failure at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala. Due to a power outage in the area, one of the light towers at the HPCA stadium malfunctioned. BCCI regrets the inconvenience caused to the in-stadium attendees.”
In the context of the tournament, both PBKS and DC remain in contention for the playoffs. Looking ahead, PBKS will face Mumbai Indians (MI) on 11 May in Ahmedabad and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on 16 May in Jaipur. Meanwhile, DC’s remaining fixtures include games against the Gujarat Titans on 11 May in Delhi and the MI on 15 May.
