As some players will not be available for the remainder of the IPL 2025, which will resume on May 17 in Bengaluru, the replacement player rule has been changed slightly. Franchises will be allowed to make temporary signings for the remainder of the IPL, but these newly signed players will not be eligible for retention in the next auction.

The existing rule states that franchises are allowed to make new signings in case of injury or sickness before the team’s 12th game of the season. However, given the circumstances, this new rule will be very useful for franchises, and they are expected to welcome the decision.

The league said in its memo: “Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament.”

“Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026”

“This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026.”

It has also been clarified that the players who were signed as replacements before the IPL’s suspension will be eligible for retention. The IPL was suspended on May 9 due to tensions between India and Pakistan.

The first match after the suspension will be between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and it will be played in Bengaluru.
