Orange Cap race in IPL: Just one run separates the top two contenders for the Orange Cap after the Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Titans game at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Yadav currently has the Orange Cap as the top scorer of the season with 510 runs against his name after 12 innings. He has an average of 63.75 and a strike rate of 170.56 after his 24-ball 35 against the Gujarat Titans. His closest contender for the Orange Cap, Sai Sudharsan of the Gujarat franchise, is one run behind Yadav with 509 runs from 11 innings.

Earlier in the season, when Yadav had claimed the Orange Cap for the first time in Mumbai’s 54-run victory over on Sunday, his joy had been shortlived as Virat Kohli had snatched it away on the same day in the second game of the double-header Sunday.

“It’s the first time I am wearing this (Orange Cap) after a long time, feels really special,” Yadav had told the broadcasters JioHotstar in the mid-innings break of Mumbai’s game.

Before the game, when asked on a special show on JioHotstar whether the Orange Cap is a goal or if strike rate and team impact matter more, Sudharsan said that his focus was “being more impactful”.

“Getting runs, being more impactful, and doing it at a very good strike rate—that’s where the responsibility kicks in for the team. If you’re consistent enough to make your team cross the line, that’s the most important thing. And the Orange Cap is a by-product. If you think about the Orange Cap, I feel your potential goes down. You restrict yourself a bit more because personal preferences come in front of team preferences,” the Gujarat Titans opener had said.
