IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Titans, Match 56 - Who Said What?
SHARE

Gujarat Titans (GT)Ā won against Mumbai Indians (MI) by three wickets (DLS method) at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, May 6, to move to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 points table.

Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to field first. Mohammed Siraj struck off the second ball of the match as he sent Ryan Rickelton packing. Arshad Khan accounted for the wicket of Rohit Sharma in the fourth over as MI lost both their openers for 26 runs. Later in the game, Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jacks capitalised on reprieves and stitched a crucial partnership. However, a batting collapse saw them finish with only 155/8 on the board.

Gujarat Titans suffered a batting collapse of their own and eventually needed 15 runs off the last over in an innings with two rain breaks. Deepak Chahar was hit for a four and a six by Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee, respectively. The right-arm pacer also bowled a no ball, which didn’t help MI’s cause. Coetzee was dismissed off the penultimate ball, as Arshad Khan needed to score one run off the final delivery. The former MI player drilled one to Hardik Pandya at mid-off, who missed a run-out chance at the non-striker’s end.

Talking Points

1. Rashid Khan shows signs of returning to form

Rashid Khan bowled a wonderful spell through the middle overs for Gujarat. He kept the dangerous duo of Jacks and Suryakumar quiet. The Afghan stalwart accounted for the wicket of Jacks, who was MI’s top scorer. In his four overs, Rashid conceded just 21 runs and picked up one wicket. During the mid-innings break, he told the commentators that he felt like he was 70-75% of his prime self.

2. Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance brings MI back in the game

Gujarat Titans were cruising at the first rain break, needing just 49 runs off the last six overs with eight wickets in hand. Shubman and Sherfane Rutherford were looking to take GT home after the rain interval. However, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a peach to castle the GT skipper, and this opened the floodgates. The veteran seamer also bagged the wicket of Shahrukh Khan and finished with phenomenal figures of 2/19 in his four overs.

3. Batting collapses for both teams

Interestingly, both MI and GT suffered similar batting collapses. The third wicket partnership for MI yielded 71 runs off 43 balls. However, from 97/2, they slumped to 123/7. Meanwhile, GT were in a comfortable position in their run-chase at 113/2. However, Bumrah and his fellow MI bowlers bowled with a lot of grit and determination to reduce the visitors to 126/6.

Who Said What?

Hardik Pandya, MI (Losing Captain)

I think we fought really well, we kept pushing as a group. I think it wasnt’t a 150 wicket, but we were short by 25 runs. Credit to the bowlers as they kept fighting (throughout the innings.). Dropped catches do bite you, but the catches didn’t bite us much. Really happy with the boys giving their 120 percent in the field and not giving up. The ground wasn’t wet in the first innings, but it was difficult for us as the rain kept coming in (during the second innings.) We had to play the game and we did that.

Shubman Gill, GT (Winning Captain and Player of the Match)

There was a little bit of chaos when we came into bat after the train but always good to have a W on your side. The game plans were different in the powerplay, the atmosphere such that it felt like a Test match. We wanted to take the game on after the powerplay but the rain kept coming. The wicket was a little bit slow, with the rain coming in, the shots were not easy to hit so we thought, when it’s in our zone, we were go for it. It was frustrating, we were ahead at one stage but we lost 4/20. But, the universe gave us a chance and we took it. When the match goes till the last ball when you chase 150, every contribution becomes important. Wins like these get you through in these big tournaments like IPL. He is coming back from injury, it’s not easy. Thoughts like these can creep in but we need to take every game at is. It’s about coming in and giving your everything when you come into play.
