The IPL has been suspended for a week by the BCCI. (PC: BCCI)

If things go to plan, the IPL 2025 might resume on May 18, RevSportz understands. A lot, though, will depend on the current geopolitical situation, which is fluid. But if the current ceasefire is maintained and there’s no misadventure from the Pakistan side, then the tournament is set for a quick resumption. Of course, it is subject to Indian government permission.

ā€œWe will review the situation today before taking a decision,ā€ a top BCCI official told RevSportz, saying that he wasn’t ā€œawareā€ of any ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) approach to its Indian counterpart about holding the remainder of this year’s IPL in England, contrary to some reports in a section of the British media.

A franchise official, however, confirmed that through back-channel communications they have been informed by the BCCI that May 17 or 18 (18th most likely) could be the tentative resumption date. ā€œNothing official, but there’s some back-channel chat that they (BCCI) want to start as soon as possible,ā€ the official told this website.

On Friday, after the BCCI had suspended the remainder of this year’s IPL ā€œwith immediate effect for one weekā€, in the wake of cross-border conflict, RevSportz contacted an IPL governing council member, asking if they had a Plan B. ā€œHolding the remainder of the IPL in the eastern and southern parts (Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai) remains an option, but we have to see how the situation unfolds,ā€ he had said.

Fifty-seven matches have already been played in this year’s tournament. The 58th game, between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abandoned midway into the first innings. With the Dharamsala airport closed, the players, coaches and support staff travelled to Jalandhar by bus before taking a train to Delhi.

Then, as the suspension of the tournament was announced, teams started to disband. ā€œOur players and extended staff have safely returned to Bengaluru and are now homebound to their respective cities and countries,ā€ Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday. It added: ā€œWe’re deeply grateful for the swift coordination and support from the BCCI, local authorities, and the police who made this possible.ā€

Franchises, though, were told by the BCCI to be ready to reassemble their players and staff in a week’s time. It is learnt that all 10 teams have started the process of recalling their overseas players and coaching staff back to India. However, they might not get all the foreign players for the home stretch.

The IPL 2025 has 12 league matches and four playoff fixtures remaining. The revised itinerary could be cramped with double-headers even if the tournament is extended beyond May 25, the date of the final. With the World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa starting on June 11 followed by India’s five-Test series in England, the IPL has a short window to manoeuvre.
