Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) emerged victorious over Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 64 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Despite the loss, GT remained at the top spot on the points table with 18 points, while LSG climbed to sixth place with 12 points.

Talking Points

1. Marsh’s mayhem with the bat

The Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh delivered a scintillating performance by taking the GT bowlers to the stands right from the start. He smashed 117 runs off just 64 balls, which featured ten boundaries and eight sixes. His innings gave LSG a massive total, with good support from Nicholas Pooran, who remained unbeaten 56* off 27 balls.

2. LSG bowlers dent GT’s top-order

GT openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill provided a brisk start, but the LSG bowlers soon turned the game towards their side. The Kiwi pacer Will O’Rourke removed Sudharsan early, while Avesh Khan got the wicket of GT skipper. Akash Singh delivered a stunning slower in-swinging delivery to castle Jos Buttler.

3. Shahrukh-Rutherford resistance

Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford displayed a strong fightback for GT with an 86-run partnership off just 40 balls for the fourth wicket. Shahrukh was aggressive by scoring 57 off 29 balls, while Rutherford contributed 38 off 22. Despite their efforts, the duo could not get close to the mammoth target.

4. Bowlers seal the deal for visitors

The LSG bowlers maintained disciplined lines and lengths by applying consistent pressure on the GT middle order. They picked up wickets at regular intervals, which ensured GT never gained momentum. Will O’Rourke was the pick of the bowlers in the second innings, who returned with impressive figures of 3/27, and Lucknow clinched the match by 33 runs.

Who Said What?

Shubman Gill, GT (Losing Captain)

We gave 15-20 extra. If we’d stopped them at 210-220 it would’ve been better, that was a huge difference. (Was bowling first just to test things out before the playoffs?) No, honestly. We bowled well in the powerplay, yes, we didn’t get wickets. But they scored 180 in the next 14 overs which was a lot. We were right in the game till the 17th over. Shahrukh and Rutherford batted well. Getting momentum back will be key in the next game.

Rishabh Pant, LSG (Winning Captain)

Happy. We talk about playing good cricket, we’ve shown on occasion we can do that. There were times in the tournament where we had our chances (but didn’t make it), but it’s part and parcel of the game. It was always a question of getting the top three today, but the way Shahrukh played show they have a good line-up. Coming into the tournament, there were injury concerns. We made sure it’s something we wouldn’t talk about. The whole batting unit has played, we lacked a bit on the fielding side. We can’t make excuses, just want to learn and move on.

Mitchell Marsh, Player of the Match

I actually first played for the Deccan Chargers, it’s been a long journey. Happy to contribute tonight. Being given the opportunity to open, the partnership with Markram has helped me. We haven’t had the best of seasons but the last two games are still important. I thought they bowled well early on. T20s these days, if you’re 12 off 12 and not time it well, it’s panic stations. But today showed you can bat through and go on to stitch big partnerships. It’s been disappointing, all teams come in to win it. The IPL is a beast of a competition, you got to be on every game. Any team can beat any team and that makes it the best tournament in the world.
