The IPL 2025 match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium turned into a night of panic and fear after the escalating tension between India and Pakistan led to the game being abruptly called off.
The incident occurred after 10.1 overs of Punjab’s innings when the floodlights suddenly went off. Spectators were evacuated, and players and staff were rushed to the hotels before being transported to Delhi via special train due to the cancellation of flight operations. The blackout was followed by a missile attack by Pakistan in Pathankot, just 80 km from the stadium.
Australian cricketer Alyssa Healy, who was in the stands supporting husband and DC player Mitchell Starc, shared her terrifying experience on The Willow Talk Podcast: “It was a surreal experience… the guy who wrangles the group of us came up and his face was white. He said, ‘we need to go right now’. Then another guy grabbed one of the children and said, ‘we need to leave right now’.”
“There was anxiety and terrified at the same time.” – Alyssa Healy
She added that the group was taken to the holding area with the players, including a shoeless Faf du Plessis: “Faf du Plessis didn’t even have shoes on… I asked Mitch, ‘what’s going on?’ He said the town 60 km away had just been smacked by missiles. The stadium was like a beacon.”
The route that took them to the safety point heightened the tension: “We ended up going southwest towards the (Pakistan) border, which was a little bit terrifying. Mitch and I have played too much Call of Duty — we noticed radar-operated missile systems in small towns.”
Healy concluded by saying she saw fireworks from a wedding, but that was not a good time to see them: “Everyone froze… I hope they have a beautiful marriage, but that was just not good timing. There was anxiety and terrified at the same time.”
