'He is beyond selection chatter' - Wasim Jaffer demands clarity over Rohit Sharma's future as ODI batter

Wasim Jaffer has called on India’s team management to provide clarity regarding Rohit Sharma‘s future as an ODI batter, particularly with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon. The former India opener believes Sharma has made himself available for the upcoming bilateral series with a specific long-term goal in mind. Jaffer’s intervention comes after Sharma was included in the ODI squad for the three-match home series against West Indies.

Speaking in a YouTube video, Jaffer expressed his view on how the Indian team operates and the need for transparent communication with Sharma. He acknowledged that the team management likely has already discussed Sharma’s role and expectations with him, but felt the ongoing media speculation requires an official statement from the selectors.

“Knowing how the Indian team operates, they would have clarified this to him. But the media has the habit of talking about these things. Rohit Sharma is not the kind of player whom you’ll judge after two or three failures. He has done so much,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

Jaffer calls for clarity from selectors

Jaffer emphasised that Sharma’s decision to remain available for selection is rooted in his ambition to play in the 2027 World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The former batter stressed that Sharma is not simply preparing for bilateral matches but has his sights set on the global tournament. Jaffer urged both chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir to publicly address Sharma’s status and end the ongoing debate about his place in the team.

“If Rohit Sharma has made himself available, his eyes will be on the 2027 World Cup. He is not working so hard to play bilaterals. So, I think Ajit Agarkar or Gautam Gambhir should give that clarity. Rohit Sharma is beyond selection chatter. You cannot judge him on the basis of one or two innings. They should end this debate,” he added.

Sharma’s World Cup focus and recent form

Sharma’s recent performance in England provided context to Jaffer’s comments. After struggling in the first two ODIs of the series, Sharma scored 138 off 110 balls in the decider at Lord’s, becoming the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the venue. This knock demonstrated his ability to deliver when it matters most, reinforcing Jaffer’s argument that Sharma should not be judged on a small sample of performances.

The West Indies series begins on September 27 at Thiruvananthapuram, offering Sharma an immediate opportunity to build on his recent form. Jaffer’s call for clarity reflects broader concerns about the uncertainty surrounding senior players’ futures in the Indian team, particularly as the World Cup approaches.
