Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 23 runs in Match No.61 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on May 17 at HPCA Stadium. With the victory, the defending champions became the first team to officially qualify for the playoffs. RCB now sit at the top of the points table with nine wins from 13 matches and have emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the title this season.

With Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) already eliminated from the tournament, only three playoff spots remain available. Seven teams are still in contention, making the race to the knockout stage extremely competitive as the business end of the tournament approaches in the 19th edition of the IPL.

RCB started their campaign on a strong note with back-to-back victories before suffering their first defeat against Rajasthan Royals (RR). They responded brilliantly with wins over MI and LSG but later lost to Delhi Capitals (DC). The Bengaluru franchise regained momentum by defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) and DC before enduring defeats against GT and LSG once again.

However, RCB displayed consistency at the crucial stage of the season by winning three consecutive matches against MI, Kolkata Knight Riders, and PBKS to secure their playoff berth. They now have one league-stage match remaining against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 22 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

RCB will aim to finish at the top of the table, which would guarantee them a place in Qualifier 1. A victory in that match would provide direct entry into the IPL 2026 final scheduled to be played on May 31 at Narendra Modi Stadium.

Star batter Virat Kohli has been the backbone of RCB’s batting lineup with 542 runs in 13 matches. In the bowling department, veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has led from the front and currently holds the Purple Cap with 24 wickets in 13 games.

The Bengaluru-based franchise will now look to defend their crown successfully and become only the third team in IPL history to retain the title while also lifting their second IPL trophy.
