At the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on November 6, 2026, Hasan Mahmud delivered a remarkable bowling performance in the second innings of the Test against West Indies, finishing with figures of 6/90 to bowl the visitors out for 356 in their first innings. The haul made the 26-year-old the second bowler in Test history, after Nathan Lyon, to register five-wicket hauls across five different countries.

This was also Mahmud’s fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket and his second six-wicket return in the format. Notably, it was his first five-for on home soil, making the achievement at Sylhet particularly significant for the Bangladesh pacer.

Among the wickets Mahmud claimed was that of Amir Jangoo, who had scored 133, while Roston Chase was dismissed for a golden duck. An lbw decision against Joshua Bishop was initially given but overturned on review when replays confirmed an inside edge onto the pad. Mahmud also became the first Bangladesh pacer to take a Test wicket via a stumping, with Liton Das completing the dismissal of Joshua Bishop behind the stumps.

How did Mahmud’s five-wicket hauls span five different countries?

Mahmud’s journey to this elite record began in Rawalpindi in 2024, where he claimed 5/43 against Pakistan. Later that same year, he took 5/83 against India in Chennai. In 2026, he added three more five-fors across three separate countries: 6/55 against Australia in Darwin, 5/55 against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and now 6/90 against West Indies in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The Darwin performance was part of Bangladesh’s historic Test victory over Australia earlier in 2026, in which Mahmud played a key role. He also took a hat-trick in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in October 2026, becoming the first Bangladesh fast bowler to achieve that feat in the format.

Lyon remains the only other bowler to have achieved five-wicket hauls in five different countries in Tests. Mahmud’s 6/90 at Sylhet now places him alongside the Australian off-spinner in that exclusive company.

What are Nathan Lyon’s five-wicket hauls across five countries?

Lyon’s five five-fors across five countries serve as the benchmark that Mahmud has now matched. The Australian spinner’s sequence began in Sri Lanka in 2011 with 5/34, followed by 5/68 against West Indies in 2012. In 2013, Lyon took 7/94 against India and also claimed 5/50 against England at Melbourne. He then added 5/130 against South Africa in 2014 to complete his own spread across five nations.

Each of those returns came in a different country, a feat that stood as unique in Test history until Mahmud’s 6/90 at Sylhet on November 6, 2026 placed the Bangladesh pacer alongside Lyon in that record. Mahmud’s five hauls span Pakistan, India, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh, covering a different set of five nations from Lyon’s original list.
