Harmanpreet Kaur announced her decision to step down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats on October 6, 2026. The 37-year-old made the announcement through an emotional Instagram post but confirmed that she will continue playing for India. The development followed a review meeting conducted by the BCCI in Guwahati, where Harmanpreet met with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, alongside vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar.
Harmanpreet’s captaincy tenure was marked by significant achievements for Indian women’s cricket. She led India to victory in the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup and guided the team to the Asian Games gold medal in September 2026. In July 2026, under her leadership, India secured a 270-run victory against England in the first-ever women’s Test match at Lord’s, a historic milestone for the team.
“Since the day I made my debut, you’ve always been there for me, on and off the field. From guiding me through the early days to standing by me through everything, I’ve always known I could count on you,” Shafali Verma was quoted as saying by rediff.
