A one-for-one player exchange between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians is on the verge of being formalised, with Hardik Pandya heading to Mohali and Arshdeep Singh making the journey in the opposite direction. Both franchises have submitted their Expressions of Interest under the BCCI-prescribed trade framework, and both players have provided written consent to the arrangement. No third player features in the deal.
BCCI ratification is the sole procedural step that now separates the two clubs from an official announcement. Sources indicate that official holidays in India around this period have contributed to the delay. However, the Board is expected to clear the paperwork shortly, after which the trade will be formally recognised and both Pandya and Arshdeep will be registered under their new franchises for IPL 2027.
The Board’s trade regulations are explicit on the conditions that must be satisfied before any deal is recognised.
“Only players whose names are included on an EOI Confirmation and for whom a signed Consent Form has been received by the BCCI may be traded,” the BCCI states as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Why are Mumbai Indians pursuing Arshdeep Singh?
Mumbai Indians identified Arshdeep Singh as the missing piece in their pace attack after Deepak Chahar delivered underwhelming campaigns across recent IPL seasons. Arshdeep is widely regarded as India’s leading new-ball operator in white-ball cricket, and his capacity to bowl effectively at the death gives him value across all phases of an innings.
The franchise already possesses Jasprit Bumrah as their foremost death-overs specialist, and Trent Boult provides left-arm swing at the top of the innings. Adding Arshdeep to that combination would give Mumbai Indians a three-pronged seam unit capable of threatening batters at every stage of a match. Arshdeep is Punjab Kings’ all-time highest wicket-taker in IPL history, and the franchise had retained him at the IPL 2025 auction for ₹18 crore, exercising their Right to Match card to secure his services. His departure marks a significant shift for a side that invested heavily in keeping him.
What does the trade mean for Hardik Pandya and Punjab Kings?
For Pandya, the move to Punjab Kings adds another chapter to a career defined by franchise changes. After spending three years at Gujarat Titans, where he captained the side, he returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season and took charge of the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. That stint at Mumbai Indians now appears to be concluding.
At Punjab Kings, Pandya arrives into a squad that has grown considerably in stature. Shreyas Iyer has established himself as the leader over the past two seasons, and under his captaincy Punjab Kings reached their first IPL final since 2014 during the 2025 season. Pandya’s all-round ability is expected to deepen that squad further, and his experience of earning the India captaincy underlines the calibre of cricketer the franchise are set to welcome. The financial terms of the trade have not been disclosed. As an honourable mention, Jasprit Bumrah remains central to Mumbai Indians’ plans, and his partnership with the incoming Arshdeep Singh will be one of the more closely watched bowling combinations heading into IPL 2027.
