Sanjay Govil, a technology entrepreneur based in the United States, is pursuing ownership of a Big Bash League team as part of a broader strategy to acquire stakes in T20 franchise cricket across multiple countries. Govil is considering either a 50 percent stake or full ownership of a BBL club, viewing such investments as assets that artificial intelligence cannot displace in the future. His existing portfolio includes Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket and a stake in Welsh Fire from The Hundred competition.

Cricket Australia, working with Cricket Victoria and their consultant Raine Group, has formally opened the process for potential buyers to express interest in acquiring the Melbourne Renegades. A preferred owner is expected to be identified by December 12, when the BBL 2026-27 season begins. Several IPL owners are anticipated to participate in the process, creating a competitive landscape for prospective investors.

“I’m interested in the Renegades, it’s on the radar. But I think there are going to be a lot of big players who will be interested. I need to focus on what I am capable of doing. I don’t want to get into a bidding war,” said Govil to Cricinfo.

Govil’s interest in Hobart Hurricanes and stadium investment

Govil has also set his sights on the Hobart Hurricanes, where several players represent both Freedom and the Hurricanes. Ricky Ponting, who serves as Freedom’s head coach and head of strategy at Hurricanes, creates a natural connection between the two franchises. Cricket Tasmania is exploring whether a planned billion-dollar closed-roof stadium, scheduled to become Hurricanes’ home ground from 2031, could attract private investment.

Govil is currently funding development of Freedom’s cricket ground in Frederick, located approximately 70 kilometres north of Washington DC. The project is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars and is likely to be ready for the 2027 MLC season. His willingness to invest substantially in cricket infrastructure demonstrates his commitment to building long-term value in franchise teams.

“(Hurricanes)… that’s our size of team. If you look at the Welsh Fire and Freedom, we have sort of smaller franchises compared to others. There are the big boys who want to go after the big teams. I love Hobart, they are a winning team. We can make more impact in those teams,” said Govil.

Govil’s ownership philosophy and investment strategy

The structure of ownership stakes varies across Australian states. Cricket Victoria is preparing for a potential 100 percent sale of the Renegades, while other states such as Cricket Tasmania are more inclined to offer a 49 percent minority stake to private investors while retaining 51 percent ownership themselves. No final decision has been reached from states beyond Victoria. When The Hundred franchises were sold, Govil acquired a 49 percent stake in Welsh Fire, which was later increased to 50 percent, demonstrating his track record in securing and expanding ownership positions.

“I’m not just looking to be an investor. I love actively managing teams. The teams I have…I have at least 50% or 100% stake. The one thing I know is if you have two data points and you connect them, it’s always a straight line. I don’t believe in change for the sake of it. I always believe that local identity and local culture is very important. I strongly believe that the traditions need to continue. I think we need to keep building on the history and the tradition. That’s how I see it,” said Govil.
