Gabriel Martinelli eyed by Barcelona in shock transfer move

Barcelona are ‘plotting a shock summer move’ for Arsenal striker Gabriel Martinelli in an effort to reinforce their attacking options for the 2025/26 season. The Blaugrana are seeking a dynamic winger, who has the pace and ability to take-on defenders bringing direct threat from the left side of the field—skills that Martinelli has on show in droves for the Premier League.

According to sources close to the Camp Nou hierarchy, Barcelona’s recruitment staff see Martinelli as a long-term acquisition as they look to move away from signing old superstars and instead bringing in young, high-ceiling talent. His age, versatility, and capacity to press high, are tailormade for the type of football Xavi Hernández and Deco are demanding. Left-wing reinforcements are understood to be the priority after below-par seasons for both Ferran Torres and Raphinha.

Martinelli, who has developed into a key figure at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, provides searing pace, intelligent movement and a skill for making chances in high-stakes moments. His technical ability, as well as his stamina, fits seamlessly into Barcelona’s developing tactical template, which calls for relentless pressing and intelligent interplay in the final third.

A transfer would be an extremely complicated financial deal, with Barcelona still struggling under their salary cap and La Liga’s strict Financial Fair Play rules. The club would likely explore player-plus-cash offers or staggered payments to overcome these obstacles, especially since Martinelli’s camp is reportedly open to proposals if the project appeals.

Though Barcelona’s interest has come as a surprise to many throughout European football, the Gunners have insisted all along – Gabriel Martinelli is not for sale. The 23- year-old Brazilian, signed from his home country club in 2019, agreed a long-term contract in February 2023, with Arsenal holding an option to add a further 12 months.

Mikel Arteta views Martinelli as a building block of his project, alongside the likes of Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Martin Ødegaard. His goalscoring output did drop slightly during the 2024/25 campaign but Martinelli remains central to the way Arsenal transition in attack and defend. His harrying from the front and waspish tackling in wide areas have become tactical totems in Arteta’s system.

Furthermore, Arsenal have also stated that are no longer a selling club – especially for established core players. The club’s hierarchy will outright snub any offer from Barcelona, especially given the timing—Arsenal plan to challenge strongly for the Premier League and Champions League next season.

Martinelli has admitted in the past that he supported Barcelona growing up, but he remains fully committed to Arsenal’s project. His friendship with his teammates and the faith shown in him by Arteta are also significant in his growth and happiness at the club.

Barcelona’s reported interest in Gabriel Martinelli is a daring one but one that is simply unlikely to happen, not in the short-terms at least. The Brazilian’s attributes would definitely improve Barcelona’s left wing, especially given their current imbalance in attack. His directness, flair, and high pressing would suit La Liga and Xavi’s tactical demands.

But the logistical barriers are substantial. Arsenal being so strong in their position, with Martinelli’s long-term contract, the Gunners’ high hopes and not losing the player unless someone brings the big checks to the table, makes the option of an exit unlikely. Barcelona’s economic constraints also make the deal unlikely unless there is a significant outflow.

Basically, in as much as the rumour spices things up as far as the summer window is concerned, this is most likely admiration and not acquisition yet.
