Francisco Lindor bookended the game with a pair of home runs to help give the Mets a 4-2 win over the hapless Rockies.

Lindor had a big day at the plate and was involved in three of the Mets four runs. He went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three runs scored. He got the offense started right away when he led off the game with a home run against Colorado starter Kyle Freeland from the right side of the plate and then blasted another from the left side in the eighth to give the Mets their fourth run of the game. He was involved in another run in the third when he singled and scored on Juan Soto’s double two batters later. Starling Marte was responsible for the team’s fourth run when he hit a solo shot in the fourth.

David Peterson got the start and could not quite complete six innings. He allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings. He struck out five, walked one, and allowed five hits. He was not overly dominant but he did just enough against the struggling Rockies. After getting the first two outs in the fifth, he hit Thairo Estrada with a pitch and then Brenton Doyle hit a ball that ate up Mark Vientos that was ruled a hit. Ryan McMahon then ended Peterson’s night with a double that just scored Estrada. Doyle was held at third and Huascar Brazobán ended the inning without further damage.

Brazobán stayed on to pitch the seventh and gave up a home run to pinch-hitter Sam Hilliard in his first at-bat of the season. Reed Garrett followed and was perfect in his inning of work which set up the save for Edwin Díaz. Díaz was brilliant and struck out the side to easily nail down the victory.

Yes the Rockies are very bad but they also beat the Yankees and Braves this season so it is a good sign that the Mets were able to take care of business to open the series.
