Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as specialist mentor to England Men’s white-ball teams ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, with the England and Wales Cricket Board confirming the role on September 7, 2026.
Pietersen will join head coach Brendon McCullum’s coaching staff starting with the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka in September 2026, marking his first involvement with the senior England team since the 2013-14 Ashes series in Australia. England Test skipper Joe Root noted that many current England players would not have shared a dressing room with Pietersen, something Root said he was ‘fortunate’ to have done.
“I’m fortunate enough to be in that position where I did play alongside him. A lot of the guys will have watched him and got into the game because of him. It will be great for those guys to have the opportunity to work alongside him.” Root said, speaking ahead of the third Test between England and Pakistan, as quoted by the BBC.
Why does Root’s connection with Pietersen matter?
Root is uniquely placed among the current England squad to speak about Pietersen’s qualities as a cricketer and personality. Root highlighted the work the pair did together when he was a young player.
“He was always someone who gave me a huge amount, to be honest. He didn’t need to offer as much as he did to me, but he would sit there and work tirelessly, making sure I felt comfortable with my own game. He listened to all my questions and helped as much as he could. As a senior player, he was outstanding,” Root said.
Root made his England debut as a 21-year-old in 2012, the same year Pietersen was briefly dropped over allegations of sending derogatory text messages about then-captain Andrew Strauss to members of the South Africa team. Pietersen was reintegrated under Alastair Cook before being dropped again following the 5-0 Ashes defeat in 2013-14. In 2015, Strauss, serving as England’s director of cricket, stated that Pietersen would not be recalled due to a trust issue. Root further iterated that the current set-up was in a different space as compared to the team in 2014, when Pietersen was at the centre of attention, and backed the former batter’s expertise to be beneficial to the side.
“With his experience and knowledge about the game, and all that he can offer, I think he’s going to be great. You’re looking at so many hypothetical things that could go wrong, when there are so many amazing things he will bring to that environment. The world is a very different place to what it was in 2014, and the England team is in a very different place to that as well,” Root said.
What does Pietersen bring to England’s white-ball setup?
Pietersen accumulated 13,779 international runs for England across all formats, a tally surpassed only by Root and Cook in England’s all-time list. He scored more than 5,500 white-ball runs across 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is, in addition to 8,181 runs in 104 Tests. Most recently, he served as a mentor for Delhi Capitals during the 2025 Indian Premier League, giving him recent experience in a coaching and mentoring environment.
England’s 2027 World Cup campaign will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in late 2027. Pietersen’s white-ball expertise is expected to be a resource for the squad as they build towards that tournament. Root, who is leading England in the third Test against Pakistan on September 9, 2026 and seeking a 3-0 series sweep in his first series back as captain, confirmed that Pietersen’s return is a positive development for the group.
