Edinburgh Castle Rockers were crowned the first-ever champions of the ETPL after defeating Belfast Wolves by seven wickets in the inaugural final at Malahide. Andries Gous anchored the chase with an unbeaten 90 from 61 deliveries, featuring eight fours and four sixes, as Edinburgh reached 151 for three in 18.4 overs with eight balls to spare.

Edinburgh won the toss and captain Mitchell Santner elected to bowl first. The decision paid off early when Trent Boult dismissed Paul Stirling for eight, with Jack Jarvis taking the catch, leaving Belfast needing to rebuild from the outset.

Tim Tector responded with a composed and determined innings of 84 from 62 balls, hitting nine fours and two sixes. He kept the scoreboard moving while wickets fell around him and provided the backbone of the Wolves’ total throughout the innings.

Devon Conway contributed 29 from 24 balls and shared a partnership with Tector that helped Belfast recover from Stirling’s early departure. JJ Smuts broke that stand by dismissing Conway, caught by Gareth Delany. Mark Watt then removed Glenn Maxwell for three, and Boult returned to dismiss Lorcan Tucker for six, leaving Belfast under pressure at 105 for four.

Tector continued to fight deep into the innings, with Harry Manenti adding an unbeaten 16 from 14 deliveries at the close. Tom Curran claimed Tector’s wicket from the final ball of the innings as Belfast finished on 150 for five. Boult’s two-wicket spell, along with contributions from Watt and Smuts, kept the total well within reach for Edinburgh.

How did Edinburgh’s chase unfold?

Edinburgh’s reply began with intent from the top of the order. Ross Adair struck 23 from 14 balls, including two fours and two sixes, before Mark Adair had him caught behind by Tucker. Smuts made 15 at the other end, but Matthew Humphreys removed him at the end of the tenth over, leaving Edinburgh at 79 for two.

Gous remained in control throughout. He balanced patience with timely aggression, anchoring the chase as Brandon McMullen added 17 from 12 balls. McMullen was caught and bowled by Gavin Hoey, but the target was well within reach by that stage. Santner joined Gous and remained unbeaten as Edinburgh crossed the line in 18.4 overs. Gous’ innings of 90 not out proved the defining answer to Tector’s challenge for Belfast.

What does this title mean for Edinburgh Castle Rockers?

Edinburgh Castle Rockers‘ victory at Malahide marks a significant moment in the ETPL’s history, with the franchise becoming the first side to lift the title in the competition’s inaugural edition. The seven-wicket margin reflected the control Gous and his teammates maintained across both innings of the final.

Santner’s decision to bowl first set the tone, and his bowlers responded by restricting Belfast to 150 for five despite Tector’s best efforts. When Edinburgh batted, Gous ensured there was no wobble in the chase, finishing unbeaten and guiding the Rockers into the record books as the ETPL’s first-ever champions.
