At Hagley Oval in Christchurch, India A closed the opening day of the second unofficial Test against New Zealand A on 291-7, recovering from a precarious position through a captain’s knock of 99 not out from Dhruv Jurel. Jurel, who remained unbeaten at the close, struck 11 fours and three sixes in his innings to anchor the side after wickets fell at regular intervals through the middle session.

The innings began on a difficult note when Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a duck in the very first over, with Fraser Sheat the bowler responsible. Sai Sudharsan then steadied things alongside Devdutt Padikkal, the pair putting on a 91-run second-wicket partnership before Sudharsan departed for 41 off 63 balls, with Jarrod McKay taking that wicket. Padikkal continued to build and looked set for a larger score before Sheat bowled him for 80, ending a promising innings.

With the innings in some difficulty, Yash Rathod came and went for 13, dismissed by Mitchell Hay, while Brett Randell also claimed a wicket in the middle order. Sheat was the standout bowler for New Zealand A, finishing with figures of 4-50 from 19 overs. Jayden Lennox and Jarrod McKay each took one wicket alongside Randell’s contribution.

Jurel found a steady ally in Manav Suthar, who contributed 22 runs as the pair added 62 together to push India A past 250. The final partnership of the day proved equally valuable: Jurel and Akash Deep put on an unbroken 69-run stand, with Akash unbeaten on 25 at stumps, taking the total to 291-7 and giving India A a platform to build on in the second day’s play.

How did India A’s innings unfold after the early collapse?

The loss of Jaiswal without scoring in the first over set a difficult tone, and the innings required Sudharsan and Padikkal to rebuild carefully. Their 91-run stand for the second wicket was the first significant partnership of the day and gave India A some stability after the early shock. Sudharsan’s 41 off 63 balls was a measured contribution before McKay ended his stay.

Padikkal’s 80, ended when Sheat found his stumps, was the highest individual score of the day and represented the backbone of the first half of the innings. After his dismissal, the middle order struggled to hold firm, with Rathod managing only 13 before Hay struck. Sheat’s four-wicket haul at a cost of 50 runs across 19 overs was the decisive bowling performance, repeatedly breaking partnerships and keeping New Zealand A in control through the afternoon.

The lower-middle order then shifted the momentum back toward India A. Suthar’s 22 and his 62-run stand with Jurel steadied the innings once more, and the unbroken 69-run partnership between Jurel and Akash Deep at the close ensured the day ended on a positive note for the visitors.

What does Jurel’s unbeaten 99 mean for India A’s position?

Jurel’s 99 not out, built on 11 fours and three sixes, was the defining contribution of the day. As captain, he came in during a period of pressure and remained at the crease through the final session, guiding India A from a position of vulnerability to a total of 291-7 by stumps.

The unbroken last-wicket stand of 69 between Jurel and Akash Deep, who was unbeaten on 25, added crucial runs in the final session and ensured India A finished the day with momentum. Jurel will resume on 99 not out on day two, one run away from what would be a significant personal milestone in the match at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
