David Miller has been omitted from Cricket South Africa’s 2026–27 central contracts, which run from June 1, 2026 to May 31, 2027. The veteran batter was previously on a hybrid contract arrangement, which allowed him to discuss his availability for bilateral series while maintaining flexibility to prioritise certain franchise leagues. Miller’s exclusion from the new contract list marks a significant change in his status with the national team.
Miller addressed his contract situation ahead of South Africa’s white-ball tour to Australia, speaking candidly about the decision and his future intentions with the Proteas. Despite losing his central contract, the 36-year-old batter has made clear his commitment to remain available for selection across both white-ball formats.
“I lost my contract with Cricket South Africa and it’s never really nice but it’s part of life. I still want to play for South Africa, I’m still making myself available and it’s just about making sure that everything is communicated really well,” said Miller as quoted by Cricinfo.
Miller’s career record with South Africa underscores his experience at international level. He holds 178 caps in the South African squad, the most of any player in the current group. His run tally of 4,611 runs ranks second in the squad, behind only Quinton de Kock’s 7,123 runs. These statistics reflect his long service to the national team since his debut.
“I just want to play against the best. I love competing against the best in the world. And so making myself available for South Africa is something that I’ve always wanted to do. My priority has always been South Africa. Although I’ve played a lot of leagues, I’ve always wanted to play for South Africa and I love playing for South Africa. Nothing’s changed. It’s just that I’ve lost my contract. That’s pretty much where it stands and I still make myself available. So if selected, then I’ll play,” said Miller.
The decision to omit Miller from central contracts comes as South Africa prepares for a busy international schedule. Several younger players have been awarded first-time national deals, including Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis and Karabo Meso. Head coach Shukri Conrad has indicated that competition for places remains intense, with Dewald Brevis competing with Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller for XI spots.
Miller’s previous availability for South Africa has sometimes been affected by franchise commitments. He missed South Africa’s white-ball tour to Australia in August to participate in the Hundred, though a hamstring injury later prevented him from joining the squad in England for that series. He was part of South Africa’s T20I series in India in December and featured in the T20 World Cup at the start of 2026. Despite these competing demands, Miller has consistently expressed his desire to represent the national team at the highest level.

“There’s obviously healthy competition at the moment and a lot of youngsters coming through. I’m well aware of that and it’s great to have that competition. It breeds healthy growth and I just want to give back whatever I can with the youngsters and I actually learn a lot from the youngsters nowadays. There’s a lot of players putting their hands up and it’s about doing what works for me, giving myself the best chance. preparing really well and giving everything that I can for the team,” he said. “I’ve got to trust what’s worked in my career and not put a lot of pressure on myself because I know what I’m worth and I know what I’m capable of,” said Miller.
“It’s just about making sure that I’m really focused and, and tuned in to what’s important. The World Cup is always tough for any selector, coach or player. It’s always a difficult one but it is a healthy place to be in for South Africa. I just want to do what I can and, and I know what I’m worth,” he added.
