Among the recent reports, one made a surprise announcement about Liverpool’s 2022 transfer plan. Before signing Darwin Nunez, the Reds had a real chance to acquire Alexander Isak. The two players were both targeted by teams across the continent of Europe—Nunez was scoring every other game for Benfica, while Isak was doing the same in Spain with Real Sociedad. Both were talent-scouts for the Reds but ended up signing Darwin Nunez instead. He arrived for an enormous price, nearly £85 million, as their next big attacking superstar. With Isak playing so impressively at Newcastle these days, fans are beginning to question whether Liverpool actually made the correct decision. This difference between the two is still in the news.

Liverpool needed a striker who could keep up with their high-intensity, speedy style of play. Darwin Nunez was better suited to that. He was quick, powerful, and had shown good work rate in his games for Benfica, especially in the Champions League. Alexander Isak had great technical skills and was a clever player but hadn’t played for a high-press league before. That left Liverpool’s management with worries regarding how quickly he would be able to adapt. They wanted someone who was ready to produce straight away. So while Isak was in contention, Liverpool went with Nunez. Newcastle then approached and signed Isak, giving him a high-profile spot in their rising team.

Revealed: Why Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez over Alexander Isak – as £85million flop nears Anfield exit https://t.co/FE5hwoxK9h

Darwin Nunez has had something of a rollercoaster at Liverpool. He has netted important goals and added pace and energy to the attack. Fans like him for his work rate, movement, and unpredictability. At the same time, he has also blown important opportunities and has been anything but consistent on some occasions. Some fans are optimistic, while others are starting to lose hope. With new manager Arne Slot coming in, Nunez might find a better touch. If he can get his finishing sorted and gain some confidence, he can be the league’s best striker. Liverpool believe he has it in him and are not quite going to give up on him yet.

Alexander Isak, however, has also found form at Newcastle United. He netted 21 goals in the previous Premier League season and quickly became one of their primary players. Isak stands out because of his calm finishing, smart movement, and composure under pressure. Newcastle’s more measured game plan suits his style better than Liverpool’s fast pace. Had Liverpool brought him in, it is doubtful he would have fitted in so seamlessly. Nevertheless, his impact has left people questioning what could have happened at Anfield.

The Darwin Nunez vs Alexander Isak debate will continue to burn for years, at the very least, if both forwards remain in the Premier League. Nunez has time to improve. He is younger than Isak and physically stronger, so there is some potential there for development. If he can establish a greater level of consistency in front of goal, Liverpool’s decision would then seem prudent. But if Isak continues to shine while Nunez struggles, the sceptics will have been proved right. This is a reminder that there’s always an element of gamble when it comes to transfers and success is a combination of talent and timing.

I believe that Liverpool made a brash but logical move. Darwin Nunez had what Liverpool needed—a hard-grinding frontman with quickness and strength. Sure, Isak is now a superstar, but that does not necessarily mean Nunez cannot become one. Sometimes it just takes a bit longer for players to gel, particularly in the pressure of a large environment. With the right guidance, Nunez could still be that player Liverpool aspired to. This transfer signing wasn’t a mistake—this was a risk. And if Nunez turns out to be what he’s capable of, it could pay off in a tremendous manner.
